DeSantis Responds To Deadly Orlando Shooting Spree

(Lake Buena Vista, FL)-- Governor Ron DeSantis is working on a plan to hold people more accountable for their actions. While in Orange County yesterday, DeSantis described the shooting spree in Orlando last week that left three people dead as horrific beyond belief. The suspect, 19-year-old Keith Moses, has a long criminal history dating back to 2018. DeSantis said the idea of cycling people with long rap sheets back into the community without prosecuting them is a huge problem. The governor said he is working to ensure judges hold them accountable with a new crime package. A victim of that shooting is making progress in his recovery. Spectrum News 13 photographer Jesse Walden was released from the hospital yesterday.

DeSantis Appoints Members Of New Reedy Creek Board

(Orlando, FL)-- The board that governs Disney now has new members. Governor Ron DeSantis announced who will sit on the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. The board's chair is Tampa lawyer Martin Garcia. The other members include Orlando lawyer and Valencia State College trustee Michael Sasso, and Orlando's Ron Peri. He's chairman and CEO of The Gathering USA. The five appointees still need to be approved by the state senate. The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District replaces the Reedy Creek Improvement District. Moms for Liberty co-founder, Bridget Ziegler is another of the board appointees.

U.S. Supreme Court Rejects Orlando Bars COVID-Related Lawsuit

(Tallahassee, FL)-- The U.S. Supreme Court will not hear arguments in a coronavirus-related lawsuit filed by a group of Central Florida bars. The high court did not explain the reason behind its decision to reject the case. The establishments in Orlando were trying to get compensation after they were forced to shut down during the early stages of the pandemic. They claimed the restrictions were unconstitutional. The Florida Supreme Court also declined to take up the dispute last year.

Lawyer Arrested For Stealing From Clients

(Clearwater, FL)-- A Pinellas County lawyer is accused of stealing from his clients. Pinellas Park's Christopher Reynolds was arrested yesterday for grand theft and money laundering. The 44-year-old allegedly stole over 840-thousand dollars from 16 clients over the last five years, but investigators believe there could be more victims. Sheriff Bob Gualtieri says the personal injury lawyer used the money for drugs, OnlyFans subscriptions and Uber rides.

Broward County Man Arrested For Trying To Steal Woman's Home

(Miami, FL)-- A Broward County man is accused of trying to steal an elderly, bed-ridden woman's home. Miami-Dade Police yesterday arrested Oakland Park's Tom Roy Jenkins on charges that include grand theft and elderly exploitation. The 43-year-old allegedly used a phony driver's license and fake documents to pose as the 86-year-old Miami woman's son so he could sell her house for 500-thousand dollars. Police tell NBC 6 the title company alerted them to what Jenkins was trying to do.

Columbia County Woman Sets Boyfriend On Fire

(Lake City, FL)-- A Columbia County woman is accused of setting her boyfriend on fire. Lake City Police arrested Stephanie Britton yesterday for aggravated battery. The 37-year-old allegedly set 72-year-old Herman Humphries on fire Saturday night with rubbing alcohol and a cigarette lighter. He suffered first-degree burns on his head, back and hands, but he's now out of the hospital. Humphries tells News4Jax being on fire is not a good feeling, and he's happy to be alive and well.

Seattle Ranked As Nation's Saddest Large Metro Area

(Seattle, WA)-- Seattle leads the list that may not surprise many people. A new survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau found that Seattle is still the nation's saddest large metro area. The Emerald City ranked number one with the highest percentage of respondents who answered they were feeling depressed and hopeless. In first two weeks of February, nearly half of Seattle-area adults reported feeling down. Riverside-San Bernardino took second place and Phoenix came in third. Los Angeles and San Francisco made it to the top ten saddest cities, while Washington D.C., Chicago, New York and Dallas rounded out the list. The national survey ranks the top 15 saddest large metro areas.
