Disney Announces Layoffs

(Orlando, FL)-- Disney will lay off thousands of workers. CEO Bob Iger announced yesterday he plans to let go of seven thousand employees. That amounts to about three percent of its employees, worldwide. Iger estimates this will save the company five-and-a-half billion dollars. He didn't say how many of the layoffs will include employees in Central Florida, but the Orlando Sentinel reports Disney has not filed any layoff notices with the state. The layoffs come even as Iger announced profits for the most recent quarter were up eight percent from a year ago.

House Committee Approves Disney Bill

(Tallahassee, FL)-- Disney is a step closer to losing its power to self-govern. The House State Affairs Committee yesterday approved a plan to abolish the Reedy Creek Improvement District. It would be replaced with the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. The bill allows the governor to appoint all five members of the Board of Supervisors that would oversee the district. The full House will vote on the bill today in Tallahassee. From there, it'll go to the state senate.

Mental Competency Hearing Held For Brevard County Murder Suspect

(Titusville, FL)-- The mother of a Brevard County murder suspect says he has a history of mental health problems. David Owens was the subject of a mental competency hearing yesterday. He allegedly killed two women at Parrish Medical Center seven years ago while high on bath salts. His mother testified yesterday that she witnessed him suffer psychotic episodes many times. A judge will rule next month on whether the 36-year-old is competent to stand trial.

Man Arrested After Standoff At Jax Beach Hotel

(Jacksonville Beach, FL)-- A Louisiana man is in custody after an hours-long standoff in Duval County. Jacksonville Beach Police yesterday arrested Tyrone Banks for aggravated assault. The 36-year-old barricaded himself in a room at the Best Western Oceanfront when police arrived for a report that he attacked someone with a gun. The standoff came to an end after two-and-a-half hours when police used a flash bang to distract him before entering the room.

Arrest Made In Death Of Woman In New Tampa

(Tampa, FL)-- A Tampa man is accused of killing his pregnant girlfriend. Police yesterday arrested Billy Adams for the shooting last month that killed Alana Sims in New Tampa. The 22-year-old Sims was five-months pregnant with Adams' child when she was shot near the Easton Park subdivision. Investigators believe Adams wanted her dead because he didn't want to be involved with her or be a father. Police say he confessed and was not remorseful.

Tallahassee Fairs Poorly In State Capital Safety Study

(Juneau, AK)-- Tallahassee is not one of the best state capitals for safety and quality of life, but it's not the worst. That's according to a new study out by financial website WalletHub that compared all 50 capitals across 49 indicators, including affordability and economic well-being. Tallahassee came in 30th place. The best state capital to live in was Austin, TX.
