Florida Medical Boards Block Treatments For Transgender Minors

(Tallahassee, FL) --Florida doctors will no longer be allowed to provide treatments such as puberty-blocking medications, hormone therapy, and surgery to transgender people younger than 18. Those treatments are forbidden under rules approved Friday by the Florida Board of Medicine and the Florida Board of Osteopathic Medicine. The actions follow a June petition filing by the Florida Department of Health seeking a rule-making process for treatment of gender dysphoria.

St. Petersburg Man In Custody For Allegedly Assaulting Teen . With Laundry Detergent

(St. Petersburg, FL) -- A St. Petersburg man is facing charges after he allegedly attacked a teen last week and poured laundry detergent down the boy's throat. Police say 37-year-old Bronden Brokka Riley faces a child-abuse charge after he and the alleged 14-year-old victim got into a beef on Thursday while the two were in a vehicle together. The teen claims Riley struck him several times before pulling him out of the vehicle and pouring liquid detergent into his mouth. A court date in the case is pending.

Panic At Dolphin Mall Over Supposed Gunshots

(Sweetwater, FL) --Unfounded rumors are responsible for spreading panic at a mall in Miami-Dade County. Shoppers at the Dolphin Mall went into hiding after hearing word of shots being fired. Sweetwater Police responded and found no evidence of a shooting. While the reports were false, the fears were real. One woman tells 7News it was extremely scary to see a stampede of people screaming and running out of the mall.

(Cape Canaveral, FL) -- The weather could disrupt SpaceX's plans for an upcoming launch. The company has a launch planned for tomorrow morning at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, but launch conditions are only 30 percent Go. Forecasters are mostly worried about wind and rain. Wednesday is the backup day, but launch conditions then are only 20 percent Go.

CDC: Alcohol-Related Deaths Spiked During Pandemic

(Atlanta, GA) --New data from the CDC shows deaths from alcohol use in the U.S. spiked during the pandemic and killed more than 49-thousand people in 2020. The death rate jumped 26-percent from 2019 to 2020. That's almost the same increase over a year as over the entire decade before. The cause for more than half those deaths was alcoholic liver disease, with mental and behavioral disorders stemming from alcohol use following.

NPS: Don't Lick The Psychedelic Toads

(Washington, DC) --The National Park Service is warning outdoor enthusiasts not to lick the Sonoran desert toad. The large amphibians are found across the American southwest, and secrete a potent toxin from glands behind their eyes. While smoking the poison can cause psychedelic effects, ingesting it directly can make humans sick and even be enough to kill a fully grown dog. According to the Oakland Zoo, the toads can grow up to seven inches in length and are identified by their distinctive call, which sounds like a "ferryboat whistle." NPS posted the warning to their Facebook page last week, saying "with most things you come across in a national park, whether it be a banana slug, unfamiliar mushroom, or a large toad with glowing eyes in the dead of night, please refrain from licking."
