UF Faculty Senate Approves No-Confidence Vote On Ben Sasse Selection Process
(Gainesville, FL) --The University of Florida's Faculty Senate has approved a no-confidence vote on the selection process that led to Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse [[ sass ]] being named the sole finalist. The 72-to-16 no-confidence vote on the process the search committee followed in naming Sasse came in an emergency meeting on Thursday. The no-confidence resolution was drawn up after criticism of some of Sasse's statements on issues such as LGBTQ rights. The UF board of trustees is scheduled to consider the Republican senator for the university president's post on Tuesday.
Appeals Court Blocks Orange County Rent Control Ballot Measure
(Orlando, FL) --An appeals court is blocking a rental control measure on the Orange County ballot and that's almost certainly already gotten votes in support as early voting is underway. The 42-page appeals court ruling handed down on Friday says the rent control measure never should have been allowed a spot on the ballot. Mayor Jerry Demings said the county will file a motion for a rehearing.
Melbourne Man Arrested For Shooting At Police Officers
(Melbourne, FL) --A man is accused of trying to kill police officers in Melbourne. Anthony Rivera had a remote court appearance yesterday after Saturday's incident at a home on Millicent Circle. Police were called to the home for a domestic violence call, and when they arrived, Anthony Rivera allegedly shot at them. One officer returned fire, but no one was hurt. Crisis negotiators were called to the home, and the 32-year-old surrendered. He's facing charges that include three counts of attempted murder.
UF, UGA Apologize For Anti-Semitic Message Outside TIAA Bank Field
(Jacksonville, FL) --Rivals on the field are joining forces to condemn hate off the field. The University of Florida and the University of Georgia issued a joint apology yesterday over a sign displayed at their football game in Jacksonville Saturday. The sign outside TIAA Bank Field read 'Kanye is right about the Jews.' In their message, the schools say they strongly condemn the anti-Semitic hate speech projected outside the stadium. They also say they're proud to be home to strong and thriving Jewish communities at UGA and UF, and we stand together against hate. Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry also condemned what he calls cowards and their cowardly messages.
One Killed, Eight Hurt In Tallahassee Shooting
(Tallahassee, FL) --Tallahassee's mayor is praising police for their response to a deadly shooting. One person was killed, and eight others were hurt in a shooting this weekend on West Pensacola Street. Three people are in custody, including one who was shot in the back by police. Police Chief Lawrence Revell says the man was armed, he refused to drop his gun, and the officers wanted to make sure he didn't hurt anyone else. Mayor John Dailey Tweeted that he's proud of the quick response of the brave men and women of the TPD who put the safety of others ahead of their own. He adds their quick response prevented further casualties, and their bravery should be lauded.
Tampa Group Wants Citizens Review Board To Have Subpoena Power
(Tampa, FL) --The Tampa City Council will discuss a controversial proposal to give the Citizens Review Board more power. The Tampa Bay Community Action Committee announced yesterday it supports giving the board subpoena power. Tampa Police, though, say the board already has what it needs to be productive. A city spokesman tells 8 On Your Side this is a completely unnecessary proposal supported by a small but vocal group of defund-the-police activists. The Citizens Review Board was established seven years ago to ensure police accountability and build trust with residents.The city council will debate the issue at tomorrow's meeting.
Missing Miami-Dade Boy Found In Canada
(Miami, FL) --The search for a missing Miami-Dade County child is over after he was found far from home. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police announced yesterday that 12-year-old JoJo Morales was found in New Brunswick. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children says a tip came in from someone who saw JoJo and his father at a Walmart in Moncton.Miami-Dade Police say JoJo was not hurt and is in good health. JoJo's father, grandfather and grandmother were arrested. JoJo had been missing for two months, and he was the subject of an Amber Alert. JoJo's father and mother had been in a custody battle.
Country Singer Defends Bringing DeSantis On Stage
(Undated) --Country singer Luke Bryan is defending his decision to welcome a man he calls a very polarizing figure. At a concert Friday night in Jacksonville, Bryan brought Governor Ron DeSantis out on stage. Bryan was using the concert to raise money for the Florida Disaster Fund. Bryan was criticized on social media for appearing with DeSantis, but Bryan says he wanted to help the victims of Hurricane Ian. He posted on Instagram that he knew people would chatter about this, but he says it felt right to help people in a state that has been good to him.
Some Milwaukee Bars Ban Jeffrey Dahmer Costumes
(Milwaukee, WI) --Some LGBTQ bars in Wisconsin are banning costumes of Jeffrey Dahmer. The serial killer notoriously preyed on the city's gay population, killing 17 men and boys between the 70s and 90s. Now, several gay bars in Milwaukee are telling people that Dahmer costumes will not be allowed inside on Halloween. One bar wrote on social media they have the right to refuse service to anyone in a "hateful, racist, and otherwise disrespectful" costume, which includes real life serial killers like Dahmer.
