Melbourne Airport Authority Approves New Residential Development
(Melbourne, FL)-- A new mixed-use project is a step closer to opening in Brevard County. The Melbourne Airport Authority yesterday approved selling 55 acres to Crystal Lagoons for almost nine million dollars. Crystal Lagoons plans to build a complex called Lakoona Beach. It'll include homes, shops and a man-made lagoon with a beach. Crystal Lagoons' founder says he wants to have something for tourists to do without having to go to Orlando or Cape Canaveral. The city council and FAA still have to approve the sale.
Putnam County Teen Shots Five-Year-Old Following Argument
(Interlachen, FL)-- A five-year-old is in critical condition after a shooting in Putnam County. A man told deputies he was driving with his child Tuesday when he thought a 17-year-old boy was trying to get his attention near Interlachen. When he pulled over an argument broke out and the teenager started shooting. Police say the child is in critical but stable condition. The 17-year-old suspect is in custody, facing at least five felony charges.
Dollar General Employee Accused Of Poisoning Coworker
(DeLand, FL)-- A Dollar General employee in DeLand is accused of trying to poison his coworker. Police say they were called to the store on Monday to investigate. One of the workers said they left their soda unattended while he went to the bathroom and came back to it smelling like bleach. Jerome Ellis is facing charges after he was caught on camera pouring the cleaning supply into the drink. Ellis admitted to the crime, saying the coworker was being difficult to work with.
Mayoral Candidates Spar Over Campaign Signs
(Edgewater, FL)-- A mayor's race in Volusia County is heating up over campaign signs. Michael Ignasiak [[ig-NAY-zee-ack]] and Diezel [[DEE-zill]] Depew [[duh-PEW]] are running for mayor in Edgewater, and Depew says Ignasiak stole some of his campaign signs on South Ridgewood Drive on Saturday. Police say Ignasiak admitted to taking the signs, but he says he did it because they were blocking his signs and were in the city's right of way. While the signs were in the right of way, police say only authorized city employees are allowed to remove them. Ignasiak is charged with petit theft.
UNF Poll Shows Comfortable Leads For DeSantis And Rubio
(Jacksonville, FL)-- Unlike his last race for governor, this one may be a breeze for Ron DeSantis. A University of North Florida poll released yesterday shows the Republican incumbent beating Democrat Charlie Crist by 14 points. In 2018, DeSantis won by less than one percentage point. The senate race isn't looking much closer.Republican incumbent Marco Rubio leads Democratic Congresswoman Val Demings by 11 points. The UNF poll also shows Republicans leading in races for attorney general and agriculture secretary. UNF Political Science Professor Dr. Michael Binder [[binn-der]] says Florida has become a red state.
Orange County Elections Supervisor Discusses "The Big Issue" This Election
(Orlando, FL)-- Educating voters is a big part of what elections officials are doing in Orange County. Elections Supervisor Bill Cowles [[COW-ilz]] says the big issue for his office is that people coming from other states have different experiences and expectations. He says it's important for people to realize not every state does everything the same way. For instance, Cowles says we don't use the same equipment they have in Georgia. He also recently told the News Service of Florida a lot of times once he reassures local voters of how our process works, they get it. Okaloosa County Elections Supervisor Paul Lux says disinformation, misinformation and malinformation are the biggest challenges this election cycle.He defines disinformation as stuff people get wrong and put out there as gospel. Misinformation is information purposely disseminated to confuse people, and he says malinformation has a kernel of truth but it's skewed to mislead people.
Two California Weed Companies Sued For Not Getting Consumers High Enough
(Sacramento, CA)-- A class-action lawsuit has been filed against two marijuana companies for allegedly not getting consumers high enough. The lawsuit was filed against DreamFields Brands, Inc and Med for America, Inc. The suit alleges that Jeeter prerolls advertise much higher THC level than they actually contain. The suit alleges that Jeeter's mislabeled packaging violated multiple California consumer laws and regulations set by the state's Department of Cannabis Control.
