Only Florida Governor Debate Rescheduled
(Fort Pierce, FL) --The only scheduled debate for Florida's next governor is on the calendar. The original debate between Governor Ron DeSantis and Charlie Crist was set for this Wednesday, but was postponed because of Hurricane Ian. The televised event will now take place on October 24th at the Sunrise Theater in Fort Pierce. The debate will be broadcasted on a variety of local stations across the state, according to the host television station WPEC-TV. Early in-person voting for midterm elections will begin as early as the night of the debate.
Judge Rejects HillsCo Transportation Tax Referendum
(Tampa, FL)-- Those who want to reimagine transportation in Hillsborough County are dealing with a setback. A circuit court judge yesterday rejected the All for Transportation tax hike referendum set for next month's ballot. The referendum asked voters to approve a one-cent sales tax to pay for transportation projects, like roads, bike paths and public transit. A former member of the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Board asked the judge to toss the referendum because the way it was worded was too vague. Tyler Hudson co-founded All for Transportation, and he tells ABC Action News he hopes the county commission will explore every legal avenue to bring this question to the voters on November 8th.
Sanibel Island Residents Worry About Voting
(Sanibel, FL)-- While most of their energy is focused on rebuilding, some Lee County residents are also worried about the upcoming elections. Election Day is less than a month away, and Sanibel Island resident Ellen Kenner wonders how she'll be able to vote. She says the island's voting locations are gone. The island has about six thousand voters, and Mayor Holly Smith tells Fresh Take Florida she'll work with the county to make sure everyone will be able to vote.
FDLE Confirms 102 Death From Hurricane Ian
(Tallahassee, FL)-- Over 100 deaths are confirmed from Hurricane Ian. The FDLE announced yesterday that the Medical Examiners Commission has confirmed 102 deaths in the state. Lee County has the most with 52. Monroe and Sarasota counties are next with seven each.
Osceola County School Board Member Praises SRO After Fight With Student
(Kissimmee, FL)-- An Osceola County School Board member believes a new video exonerates an SRO who fought with a student. Bodycam video released yesterday shows a School Resource Officer trying to break up a fight at St. Cloud High School last week. A 15-year-old student can be seen grabbing the officer and slamming him to the ground. Other officers intervened and handcuffed the boy, who's now facing charges. School Board Vice Chair Julius Melendez says the officer followed his training, and he tells News 6 he's proud of the way officers handled the situation.
Men Arrested For DUI After Crashing Lamborghinis In Front Of Denver Fire Station
(Denver, CO)-- Two men are facing DUI charges after crashing their expensive cars in front of a Denver fire station. Police say the two men driving Lamborghinis began revving their engines as they sat at a stoplight on Speer Boulevard on Thursday night. When the light changed, the cars started racing each other until they crashed into a third vehicle in front of Denver's Fire Station Number One. One of the Lamborghinis caught on fire after the crash, though the fire was out by the time firefighters arrived. The driver of that car may be facing a really expensive repair bill. Police say he could not provide proof of insurance at the time of his arrest.
