New NASA Image Reveals Aftermath Of Hurricane Ian
(Tampa, FL)-- A new image released by NASA this week shows the aftermath of Hurricane Ian from space. International Space Station astronaut Bob Hines tweeted out the picture that shows a new shade of blue in the Gulf of Mexico. Hines said the image "shows how the Florida peninsula is shedding all the water Hurricane Ian dumped on it." He added that the image was taken two days after the storm made landfall.
FEMA OKs $150M In Grants For Florida Households Impacted By Hurricane Ian
(Tallahassee, FL)-- FEMA is greenlighting $150 million in grants to more than 100 thousand Florida households impacted by Hurricane Ian. Federal officials say assistance may fund temporary lodging, home repairs and other disaster-related expenses. Currently, FEMA grants of $72 million for housing assistance and $78 million for other expenses have been approved by federal officials. Meanwhile, authorities report that more than $3.5 million in U.S. Small Business Administration grants related to the hurricane have been approved, as well.
Brevard Zoo Cares For Baby Sea Turtles Driven Back To Shore By Hurricane Ian
(Brevard County, FL)-- Almost 250 baby sea turtles are recovering at the Brevard Zoo's Sea Turtle Healing Center after Hurricane Ian swept them back to shore last weekend. About 150 were brought in by the Sea Turtle Preservation Society on Sept. 29, with the remaining of the approximately 200 arriving Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. During similar swells last year, only eight baby turtles were brought to the center. In 2016, zoo officials reportedly found themselves with 500 babies to care for and feed. This year's batch reportedly was in relatively good shape, with a smattering of bacterial infections, missing flippers and/or minor scrapes.
Cruz' Judge And Lawyers To Discuss Jury Instructions Today
(Fort Lauderdale, FL)-- Today marks the start of a crucial week in Nikolas Cruz' death penalty trial in Broward County. The judge and lawyers from both sides will meet today to discuss the instructions the judge will give jurors. Closing arguments are set for tomorrow, and deliberations will start on Wednesday. Jurors will be sequestered as they debate whether the 24-year-old Cruz should get the death penalty or life without parole. A death sentence has to be agreed to unanimously on at least one of the 17 murders in the 2018 Parkland school shooting.
America's Most Haunted Cities Ranked
(Undated) -- Halloween is almost here and that means it's time to talk about ghosts. Travel and Leisure Magazine is out with a list of the top ten haunted cities in America. Coming in at number one is New Orleans, rumored to be haunted by the likes of Andrew Jackson and the notorious pirate Jean Lafitte. Chicago - site of the St. Valentine's Day Massacre - takes second place. Number three is Savannah, Georgia, while America's oldest city - St. Augustine, Florida, finds itself in fourth place followed by Portland, Oregon.
Report Finds Chick-Fil-A Has Slowest Drive-Thru
(Undated) -- Chick-Fil-A has the slowest drive-thrus in America. That's according to data from a new report. Researchers surveyed thousands of customers at different restaurants and recorded the time it took for a customer to get through the line and receive their food. Chick-Fil-A came in last place with an average of 325 seconds, however it was only because those restaurants were much busier than their competitors. Taco Bell was ranked at the number one spot, with an average of 222 seconds, while Dunkin' Donuts and KFC took second and third place.
