Here’s a recap of the week…
BML Monday: Are You Prepared for Ian?
…or worried about your preferences?
While we anticipate the arrival of Hurricane Ian, experienced Florida residents are either ready or ignoring it. The problem with this one is the continually shifting path. Models have moved it east and west and back east again with landfall, as usual, being uncertain. In any case, we are likely to experience significant impact from the storm. The Operation StormWatch Team will be here with reports of the path and impact, live coverage if the Space Coast gets severe weather and any aftermath for our area.
Until then, we have the normal course our days to address. Young families serve in our nation’s military. Given the military’s focus on gender and inclusion issues, we have to wonder how long families will want this for their kids.
Pridefest happened in Melbourne over the weekend. It was not without controversy and the politics around it.
With a major storm approaching, flooding is a concern. But, flooding has been a concern without a big storm. Has Brightline added to the problem? It would appear so.
We have those stories and more on tap for the Monday show. Let’s get the week started.
BML Tuesday: Hero, Traitor or Something Else?
As we wait for updates on Hurricane Ian, we have business to do. The morning conversation goes on with a look at differences in Chicago and Florida, our country’s fascination with UFOs, the political divide and whether it can be overcome, the rhetoric fired off at Italy’s new PM and a question. Is Edward Snowden a hero, a traitor or something else? History is the topic in our final hour.
When Dave Bowman joins us at 8am…
Among the founders of the nation stand many from Boston. For all the firebrands, the one who seemed more determined than any other to win American liberty was Sam Adams.
No... he was not a brewer. Yes, he did make malt - one of the main ingredients in beer, but he left the brewing to those who would honor his name later as they created their beverage in Boston.
Sam Adams was a skilled speaker and publicist. He used the newspapers and broadsides of the day to enflame passions and encourage action against British taxes. Even the last royal Governor of Massachusetts would later say that no other man was as effective in promoting the American position against the Crown.
BML: WIDE OPEN WEDNESDAY
…the calm before the storm
Hurricane Ian is looming. While Brevard doesn’t anticipate hurricane force winds, we will see lots of rain and potential flooding conditions. As the storm intensifies, WMMB will be here with updates and information to help us all get past the storm.
Today is WIDE OPEN WEDNESDAY on the show where you can bring up any topic you choose. I have several things on my mind, like how corporations try and control social attitudes, or expressions of them, with policies that penalize wrong thinking. PayPal is now in on the act. Parents are tired of what their children are being exposed to through schools and other venues. Surprisingly one of those venues is a church! Is it possible a Republican win in November is inevitable? There are indicators that may be the case. And just for fun, the idea has been floated to use they/them pronouns for Hurricane Ian for no other reason than to aggravate Governor Ron DeSantis. You think he’s living rent-free in some folks’ heads?
We’ll begin the day with news and then we see what’s on your mind as this pre-Ian WIDE OPEN WEDNESDAY gets rolling on BML.
BML Friday: So Long, Ian
… EFSC’s Chris Muro
Hurricane Ian may be behind us, and Brevard was largely fortunate in what Ian handed us. Not everyone was so lucky. Ian left Florida as a Tropical Storm, but once over the Atlantic resumed hurricane status and took aim for South Carolina. Florida is left in a “search, secure and stabilize” mode as we deal with the devastation left in Ian’s wake. Insured losses could reach $40b and the impact to Florida’s already fragile homeowner’s insurance market is yet to be told. As for the media and Governor DeSantis, his ability to set politics aside for the good of Floridians was met with disdain and a continued push against what was the right thing to do.
EFSC’s Chris Muro joins us in our 8am hour as we look at Brevard ballot initiatives as we look to the November General Election.
