Here’s a recap of the week…

BML Monday: Race, Republicans, Reform

…a sweet payout

It was an exciting weekend of college and NFL football. Upsets, overtime and lots of lead changes thrilled fans in what we can only hope is a preview of the season ahead. My Mountaineers took one on the chin at home against Kansas, but our other hometown team- Marshall, knocked off #8 Notre Dame. The NFL excitement was similar in what appeared to be a better start to the season than most first weeks bring.

Oberlin College took a loss leading into the weekend- they will be paying millions to that family bakery it trashed with false claims of racism.

We’ll stay with college shenanigans as BYU has apologized and reinstated a fan it wrongly accused of racism in a recent volleyball incident. The media handled that one as you might expect, but that retraction is not being heard.

Is the Republican Party in the midst of reform? I have my doubts. Cynicism does that for you. Yet, there are some candidates and even House Republicans making the claim. It’s time to put up or shut up. Florida voters will have plenty to say about that come November. We’ll take a look at what our fellow voters are thinking with the election two months away.

BML Tuesday: CBD, CNN & Jesus?

DAVE DOES HISTORY

Since they began, I have wondered about the lawsuits directed at pharmacies over the opioid crisis. Our system has developed that has these dispensaries handing out prescriptions as directed by a doctor. While our pharmacists are educated, doctors they are not. Either they do what they are told or they face the consequences. So, tell me, how are they responsible for the problem. If these suits are allowed to continue what are we to do, close the drug store and depend on CBD oil?

In a follow-up to yesterday’s discussion of the Duke/BYU fake racism allegation, one major network has stepped up. At least one of its anchors did. Maybe they are learning something.

We’ll dabble in state politics just a bit as Prime Time Charlie has tried to adopt his own new moniker. I don’t think it’s going to fly…or help his image for that matter. He’s trying to take on the juggernaut that is Ron DeSantis and he’s doing it very poorly.

Dave Bowman is back in hour three with another history lesson. DAVE DOES HISTORY closes our Tuesday on BML. Dave has noticed something I have noted through the years.Things are not always as they appear…

We have - today - an almost scriptural reverence for the founding document of the United States government, the Constitution. To listen to most conservatives speak of the Framers is almost like going to church. They were, it seems, infallible. In fact, at least one painting in our own Capitol building portrays one Framer as being apotheosized.

But this week in 1787, the true feelings were more than a bit different. As the Convention was reached its final days, some of the rancor was in danger of boiling over into loud arguments.

BML: WIDE OPEN WEDNESDAY

…the race, the restaurants, the republicans

Maybe they’re hoping to avoid the controversy that engulfed NCAA swimming as the Boston Marathon prepares for its next running. They now have a third gender classification for participants: non-binary.

Suburbia is coming to the defense of “chain” restaurants. While city dwellers have an elitism all their own when it comes to dining out; real worlders seem to be a bit more open to dining choices.

Leave it to England’s now-deceased Queen to throw a wrench into House Republican plans to launch their platform for the November election. Due to ceremony and services for the Queen, moron Republican leadership has respectfully decided to hold off on the release of their plans until after the events…the Friday after the events. You know, right at the end of the week’s news cycle where, by the following Monday, all will be forgotten. The GOP needs some marketing help!

Also available today: the DeSantis platform, Florida’s likely voters, the $1.5B BPS budget, lessons from Defund the Police and more. The more being- whatever you bring to the table on this WIDE OPEN WEDNESDAY. It's a free for all this one day a week on BML.

BML Thursday: Justice, Mistakes & Think Tanks

…Florida Today’s John Torres on 9/11

We’ll look at justice to open the show. A rape and trafficking victim killed her captor/abuser. She entered a guilty plea in his death and will now have to pay his family $150,000. Is this justice? In what world is this right? The prosecutor’s stance in the case will astound you.

Mentioned by a caller on WIDE OPEN WEDNESDAY, Lindsey Graham has filed an abortion bill in Washington. Marco Rubio has joined him and it makes me wonder if our senior senator understands what the Dobbs decision did and why he would join efforts to undo it.

What are “National Conservatives?” Are we them? Is our governor? Is it a movement, a fad or a think tank? We’ll explore that as we have the opportunity this morning.

Florida Today Engagement Editor John Torres is with us in hour-three. As a New York City native, John has a unique perspective on 9/11.We’ll get his take on the tragic day and what is now called Patriot’s Day. He also has a column discussing recent Brevard headlines coming up this weekend.

BML Friday: Fly the Sanctuary Skies!

…EFSC’s Chris Muro- state races and amendments

Forget flying the friendly skies! Illegal immigrants can now fly the sanctuary skies to wonderful locations like Washington, DC, Chicago and Martha’s Vineyard! Floridians can feel good that their government is helping those illegals to locations that welcome them and see no problem with the country’s porous border. It’s funny that those sanctuary destinations are now whining that aiding those travelers to their doorstep is somehow cruel. Could it be that their support for illegal entry to the country is contingent on their domains not being on the itinerary?

Governor DeSantis has been criticized for the Martha’s Vineyard destination. The vineyard is a “sanctuary city,” at least in name, if not practice. Well, they have some practice now. Among the governor’s critics are President Biden and CA Governor Gavin Newsom, who has a unique take on how this should be handled.

DeSantis, no wallflower at all, has a response to the critics and it’s a good one.

Should this policy continue? The legislature dedicated $12m to the project, so the money is there.

We’ll begin our General Election coverage in today’s 8am hour as Chris Muro, political science professor at EFSC, joins us to discuss statewide races and the three constitutional amendments on the ballot. If we have a chance we’ll also explore Florida’s electorate and its leanings.
