Police Credit Vest For Saving Cop Following Officer-Involved Shooting In Melbourne

(Melbourne, FL)-- A Melbourne police officer is lucky to be alive after he was shot by a suspect, Friday afternoon. Department sources say the victim and at least one other officer were responding to multiple 9-1-1 calls from a local motel when they were confronted by two individuals inside one of the rooms. Authorities say one of them, identified as 28-year-old Lukas Alves, opened fire.The victim reportedly was hit at least once, and was hospitalized with unspecified injuries. Charges are pending.

Gov. DeSantis Sends National Guard To Support Security In Prisons

(Tallahassee, FL)-- Governor Ron DeSantis is sending National Guard personnel into state prisons to support security efforts. The Governor's request to fund the project was approved by state lawmakers Friday after which the Governor signed an executive order for the Guard to be deployed in prisons across the state. The Governor's decision comes as corrections officials contend with a deficit of more than 20-percent of the quota of corrections officers needed.The Guard deployment is expected to last several months until enough corrections officers are added.

SpaceX Launch Set For Tomorrow

(Cape Canaveral, FL)-- SpaceX is hoping to have a launch as soon as tomorrow. A Falcon 9 rocket launch set for last night was rescheduled for tomorrow night at 10:10 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Launch conditions are 70 percent Go. The rocket will carry 54 Starlink satellites that will help spread high-speed internet around the world. If the launch is pushed back again, the backup date will be Wednesday night.   

Dolphins Win Opener, 20-7

(Miami Gardens, FL)-- The Mike McDaniel era is off to a good start in Miami. The Dolphins beat the New England Patriots, 20-7, yesterday at Hard Rock Stadium. It was the 39-year-old McDaniel's first game as an NFL head coach, and he showed he's not afraid to take chances. On fourth-and-seven with 24 seconds left in the first half, the Fins went for it, and wide receiver Jaylen Waddle caught a 42-yard touchdown pass to make it 17-nothing.The gutsy call seemed to be a popular one with the players. Wide receiver Tyreek Hill says it shows McDaniel has a lot of guts.   

Jaguars Drop Opener At Washington

(Landover, MD)-- The Jaguars blew a late eight-point lead and lost their opener 28-22 to the Commanders at Washington. James Robinson scored on the ground and through the air for the Jags.Trevor Lawrence finished 24-of-42 with a TD and an interception in the setback. The Jaguars host the Colts in their home opener this Sunday.

Bucs Cruise Past Cowboys In Season Opener

(Arlington, TX)-- Tom Brady and the Bucs are 1-and-0 to begin the season after cruising past the Cowboys 19-3 on Sunday Night Football in Big D. Brady finished 18-of-27 for 227 yards and a TD to Mike Evans.Leonard Fournette ran for 127 yards in the victory. The Bucs visit New Orleans this Sunday.

Crazy College Football Day Filled With Upsets

(Undated) -- A crazy day of college football brought a slew of upsets. Sixth-ranked Texas A&M and eighth-ranked Notre Dame lost at home to Sun Belt opponents Appalachian State and Marshall, in what was a banner day for the conference. Nebraska also lost at home to Sun Belt foe Georgia Southern in a game that brought the end of coach Scott Frost at his alma mater.Twentieth-ranked Kentucky went into 12th-ranked Florida and won, while Tennessee defeated Pittsburgh on the road in two of the other matchups between two top-25 teams. And in a matchup between two college football powerhouses, top-ranked Alabama used a game-winning field goal to survive an upset scare from Texas.
