Electric Bills Could Increase Next Year

(Tallahassee, FL)-- Florida residents could pay more for their electric bills next year.Florida Power and Light, Duke Energy Florida and Tampa Electric filed petitions last week detailing their struggle to keep up with increased natural gas prices. They are asking the state if they can raise monthly costs, on top of an increased rate they issued earlier this year. A state commission will need to approve the proposal before monthly utility costs would rise. They are scheduled to take up the petitions in November.

Georgia Police Officer Arrested In Polk County

(Bartow, FL)-- A police officer is one of those caught up in an undercover prostitution sting in Polk County. Sheriff Grady Judd announced yesterday that Cartersville, Georgia's Jason DiPrima was arrested last week for solicitation. The 45-year-old deputy police chief allegedly responded to an online ad and met with what he thought was a prostitute. Instead, it was an undercover deputy. Judd says DiPrima arrived at the meeting in an undercover police car. Cartersville Police were notified, and DiPrima was placed on administrative leave. 

UCF Political Analyst Discusses Governors Debate Schedule

(Orlando, FL)-- A limited debate schedule could pay off for the governor. That's what UCF Political Science Professor Aubrey Jewett says about Governor Ron DeSantis' decision to only hold one debate with Democrat Charlie Crist. The two will meet next month in West Palm Beach. Jewett says conservative Republicans believe the mainstream media is against them, and it may be good politics to refuse to participate and then attack the media for being unfair. Jewett also recently told the Orlando Sentinel DeSantis has shown a knack for getting free media attention and headlines with his frequent public appearances, and he has raised so much money that more debates won't raise his profile.

Woman Bitten By Shark In Volusia County

(New Smyrna Beach, FL)-- A woman is injured after she was bitten by a shark in Volusia County. Beach Safety Ocean Rescue says a 27-year-old New Smyrna Beach woman was bitten while in waist-deep water yesterday afternoon. She was taken to the hospital, and she's expected to survive. There's no word on what kind of shark it was. This marks the seventh shark bite of the year in the county. 

Deadly Shooting In Madison County

(Madison, FL)-- A man is dead after an argument over parking turned violent in Madison County. Madison Police say Gregory Williams was shot to death yesterday morning outside a home on Moore Street. Investigators believe he was shot while arguing with his nephew about parking in the street in Williams' neighborhood. No arrest has been announced. 

Brevard County Woman Organizing Event For National Suicide Awareness Week

(Merritt Island, FL)-- A Brevard County woman wants to channel her grief into helping others. This month marks one year since Merritt Island's Kelly Haskins lost her 18-year-old son to suicide. As part of National Suicide Awareness Week, she's organizing an event this Saturday called You Matter Merritt Island Day. Churches and schools will offer high fives, lemonade, baked goods, smoothies, ice cream and even hugs. Haskins tells News 6 if she can prevent just one family from experiencing the pain her family is going through, she will have achieved her goal. Suspect Stole Police Cruiser Then Refused To Exit After Chase

(Gaston County, NC)-- A North Carolina woman is in custody after stealing a Shelby Police cruiser. According to reports, the woman hopped into the police vehicle as an officer was talking with someone else during a traffic stop. The woman led officers on a high-speed chase up Highway 74 from Shelby into Gastonia, reaching speeds of 140 miles per hour. The suspect stopped at a Gastonia parking lot, but officers had to smash the windows of the vehicle and pull her out as she refused to exit the vehicle.
