More People Expected At Second Artemis I Launch Attempt

(Cape Canaveral, FL) -- Larger crowds are expected to grow the second attempt for the Artemis One launch slated for this weekend. Brevard County's Emergency Operations Center says they are preparing for up to 400-thousand people. That's double the amount than previously projected. For now, the launch window is set for this Saturday with weather looking 60-percent favorable.

Deadly Train Collision In Brevard County

(Melbourne, FL)-- A man is dead after he was hit by a train while trying to retrieve his hat in Brevard County. Melbourne Police say Jerome Kenerly was hit yesterday afternoon near the FEC Railway crossing on NASA Boulevard. The 39-year-old was taken to the hospital where he passed away. Police say Kenerly was crossing the tracks when his hat fell to the ground, and he went back to get it, but he couldn't get out of the way in time.

Teen Charged In Dad's Murder

(DeLand, FL)-- A teenager is accused of killing his father in Volusia County. The sheriff's office said yesterday it got an arrest warrant for 18-year-old Jonny Santiago. He's charged with second-degree murder in the death of Juan Santiago in July. Investigators believe the 52-year-old was killed at a home in Deltona, but his body was found in Lake Avalon in Orange County. Jonny is already behind bars in Lake County for charges that include attempted murder of a law enforcement officer. He allegedly got into a shootout with police officers and deputies in Mount Dora following a chase.

Seminole County GOP Chair Convicted In Ghost Candidate Scheme

(Sanford, FL)-- A top Republican in Seminole County is being punished for his role in a ghost candidate scheme. Seminole County GOP Chair Benjamin Paris was convicted yesterday and sentenced to 12 months supervised probation. He was also ordered to pay the FDLE 42-thousand dollars in restitution. The former mayor of Longwood used his cousin's name to contribute to the campaign of a ghost candidate in a state senate race two years ago. That cousin testified against Paris and told jurors Paris asked him to lie about the contribution. The independent candidate the money went to was recruited to take away votes from a Democrat running against a Republican in the District 9 election.

Polk County Sheriff Responds To Request For Diversion Program

(Bartow, FL)-- Polk County won't be part of what the sheriff calls a national agenda not to hold criminals accountable. Sheriff Grady Judd was responding this week to a group called PEACE, who publicly called for the sheriff's office to offer more first-time, non-violent offenders a chance to enter a diversion program. At a rally in Bartow, PEACE members said this would lead to fewer arrests and fewer young lives ruined. Judd says officers can only offer pre-trial diversion for misdemeanors and only if the suspect has no prior record. He also tells The Ledger if people don't want to engage in the criminal justice system, don't violate the law.

Stolen Mail Found In Abandoned U-Haul In Miami-Dade County

(Miami, FL)-- A search is underway to find a porch pirate in Miami-Dade County. Miami-Dade Police yesterday found an abandoned U-Haul truck after it crashed into a stop sign in Richmond Heights at Southwest 116th Ave and 141st Street. While investigating, police found stolen mail in the truck and an empty box nearby. That box once contained shoes that were allegedly stolen from a home on Monroe Street shortly before the crash. The homeowner says his doorbell cam shows a woman in a U-Haul stealing the package off his porch. No arrest has been announced, and the USPS has joined the investigation.
