08.15.22- Wayne’s World…party on

Party on, Wayne! Party on, Garth!

Welcome to Wayne’s World, only this one is on the Space Coast, not SNL.

A new witness has stepped forward to prolong the story of Sheriff Wayne Ivey’s influence in Brevard’s elections.

West Melbourne Councilman John Dittmore’s cousin Sean Overdorff is running for School Board in D-2. Dittmore is advising on the campaign.

In another Florida Today story over the weekend Dittmore reiterated Overdorf’s allegation that Ivey “offered him a job” to drop out of the race. Two other candidates for different offices have asserted the same.

All acknowledged the sheriff’s offer to help in future endeavors if they would pull out of the primary.

I have not seen evidence of an actual job offer, but can understand the perception.

So, is this inappropriate behavior or new candidates not understanding the game they decided to play…in Wayne’s World?

08.16.22- Not Likeable? Dems Aren’t Alone

NY Congressman Sean Maloney says Democrats have a likeability problem. He’s not wrong, but I also believe the Dems are not alone.

Maloney says Democrats are unliked, even by their own, because they can’t or don’t relate to the common man. I believe that, but also think some Republicans commit the same political sin.

He says Democrat officials are very united in their goals and actions, but they don’t ask their voters about them. He says their politicians are comfortable in the faculty lounge, but not the factory floor.

Sadly, many Republican officials are the same way. Maloney says relationship building would help the Democrats and I say Republicans could benefit from the same.

I also believe this can apply to our interpersonal relationships. Life is not all about politics. Some Democrats are likeable. So are some Republicans.

Maybe we need to work on growing those numbers.

08.17.22- Question Everything!

After weeks of press where candidates are upset that a politically influential sheriff is exercising that influence it’s time to stop the nonsense.

It’s campaign season, words are said, promises are made and so are allegations that are unsubstantiated. People can be gullible.

A caller to my show said she heard from one candidate that another candidate in the same race had tried to buy the 1st out of the race with $100k.

No names were mentioned, and no evidence given other than one candidate’s word, which in campaign season must be questioned.

Here ya go folks- if you have facts and can back them up, in other words evidence, bring it. If not, sit down, shut up and let the adults handle the election.

Innuendo and inference doesn’t get it. If you’re depending on the gullible to get elected, you aren’t the candidate we want.

Evidence is one thing- allegations without it are just crap!

08.18.22- Not Necessarily the News

I miss the days when Florida Today brought us the news. The paper was invaluable when I moved to Brevard.

I got to know our community through solid reporting of the news and politics of Brevard in the daily stories about what was happening here.

As with other media, Gannett reduced costs and staffing to make doing that job nearly impossible.

No longer do we see those regular reports of commission, council or board meetings and their impact to us all.

Instead, we see “behind the scenes” articles that appear to be stirring one controversy or another as the news fell by the wayside.

Even political coverage has gone that route with some agenda driving the coverage and much of that being irrelevant.

I miss the news. I miss the folks who made it possible to know and understand our community without trying to tell me how to think about it.

We never know what we’ve lost ‘till it’s gone.

08.19.22- It’s Up to You

ESFC Political Science Professor Chris Muro joined us on Friday’s BML. We discussed the election season and the politics of politics.

Campaigning and politics in general are more harsh than most of us would like to see. There are several reasons for that.

One that is most concerning to me is the number of rookie or unseasoned candidates and, surprisingly enough, political advisors.

Politics is not an easy game to play. It takes savvy and know-how with some insider knowledge about messaging and its timing to come out on top.

Social Media can influence opinion; it remains to be seen how effective it can be in campaigns.

Misinformation abounds and a discerning voter has to be able to separate it from the facts.

In any case, it’s up to the voters to make the call. It can be tough to make the right one.

I hope we do just that.
