Florida Education Board To Clarify Education Law
(Pensacola, FL)-- Florida education leaders are meeting this morning to clarify the Parental Rights in Education law. The Board of Education's agenda includes adopting proposed rules for carrying out the law. This means members will discuss how the legislation will be applied in grades four to 12. Under the current measure, instruction of sexual orientation or gender identity are prohibited up to third grade. Teachers have asked the state for guidance as most schools are back in session.
Coast Guard Repatriates Over 100 Cubans
(Miami, FL)-- Over a hundred people caught trying to enter the US illegally are back home in Cuba. The Coast Guard says it repatriated 107 Cubans yesterday. The migrants arrived in the Keys in nine boats this weekend. The Coast Guard repatriated 67 Cubans on Monday. A Coast Guard official says 67 people have died this year while trying to make it to South Florida in makeshift boats.
Arrest Made In Deadly Volusia County Shooting
(Daytona Beach, FL)-- A woman is dead after she was accidentally shot in Volusia County. Daytona Beach Police say Chad Keene shot his girlfriend, Karli Elliott, to death yesterday morning. Elliott had called Keene after she had an argument with her ex-boyfriend. According to police, Keene showed up with a gun and tried to shoot the ex-boyfriend but instead hit Elliott. The 30-year-old was taken to the hospital where she passed away. The 37-year-old Keene was arrested in Ormond Beach after a search that put three schools on lockdown.
Orange County Man Killed In Robbery
(Apopka, FL)-- An Orange County man is being remembered as a hero after he was killed in an attempted robbery in Alabama. Deputies in Clay County, Alabama say Apopka's Adam Simjee was shot to death Sunday after he and his girlfriend stopped to help someone at Talladega National Forest. The woman they stopped to help pulled a gun on them, but Simjee pulled a gun, too, and they exchanged gunfire. Both were hit, and the 22-year-old Simjee died at the scene. The woman survived but is facing charges that include murder. Simjee's girlfriend was not hurt, and she tells Birmingham's CBS 42 Adam died trying to save her life.
Lake County Man Dies After Officer-Involved Shooting
(Clermont, FL)-- A Lake County man is dead after a police-involved shooting. Clermont Police announced yesterday that Wallace Wainwright died Saturday from injuries he suffered in the shooting almost two weeks ago. Clermont Fire and EMS were responding to an emergency at a home on West Highway 50 when the 81-year-old started shooting at them. Police were called, and when officers arrived, Sims reportedly started shooting at them, too, and an officer shot back and hit him. No one else was hurt.
Millions Of Dollars Worth Of Phones Stolen In En Route To Miami
(Miami, FL)-- A reward is available to anyone who can help solve what's described as a mind-blowing robbery. PCS Wireless says over 50-thousand cell phones in a tractor trailer heading to Miami were stolen Sunday at a rest stop in Tampa. The truck's cab was found in Hallandale Beach, but there has been no sign of the trailer or the phones. PCS Wireless estimates the phones are valued at 11-and-a-half million dollars, and they're offering a 100-thousand dollar reward. A company official tells Local 10 News this is an extremely devastating loss.
Disney Cruise Line Drops Kids Vaccination Requirement
(Port Canaveral, FL)-- Disney Cruise Line is loosening some of its COVID-19 restrictions. The cruise line says starting September Second vaccinations will not be required for guests under 11 years old if they are sailing out of U.S. or Canadian ports. However, testing will continue to be required for all guests. The change is being implemented less than a month after the CDC dropped its program tracking cruise ships.
Columbus Man Finds Bag Of Marijuana Inside DoorDash Order
(Columbus, OH)-- A Columbus DoorDash driver is off the job after a customer got a surprising extra item. WSYX-TV reports the customer found a small bag containing marijuana with the rest of his order last week. The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, says the driver returned a short time later to offer him a full refund in exchange for the bag. Instead, the customer contacted police and DoorDash. The company says the driver has been removed from the platform. Police are gathering more information on the incident.
