Safety Improvements Coming To Florida
(Miami, FL) --The U.S. Government is helping fund safety improvements between South and Central Florida. 25-million dollars is going toward enhancing railroad crossings and pedestrian features in Miami-Dade through Brevard County. The development will go along the Brightline route. The program will become more crucial when the railway opens its extension from West Palm Beach to Orlando early next year. The money is helping cover an overall 45-million dollars planned to protect residents.
Artemis One Rocket Set For Rollout Today
(Cape Canaveral, FL) -- NASA's effort to send a woman to the moon could take a step forward today. The Space Launch Systems rocket that will be part of the Artemis One mission is expected to be rolled out at 9:00 tonight to Launch Pad 39B at Kennedy Space Center. Artemis One will launch in about two weeks on a 42-day mission around the moon.There will be no one aboard the Orion capsule on that mission, but if it's successful, it could lead to Artemis Two in a couple years. That mission will have two astronauts orbiting the moon, and if that goes well, that will lead to Artemis Three in 2025, which will put the first woman on the moon.
Orlando City Commission Passes New Security Measures
(Orlando, FL) --Some changes are coming to make downtown Orlando safer. The city commission yesterday approved three proposals that include more lighting in parking garages, more enforcement of the noise ordinance and new permit requirements for late night businesses. These changes come after seven people were hurt in a shooting downtown last month.A second reading of the new ordinances will take place next month before the changes take effect.
Three Volusia County Men Arrested In Online Child Sex Sting
(DeLand, FL) --A nationwide effort to catch child predators has three Volusia County men facing charges. The sheriff's office announced yesterday that Port Orange's Christopher Geske, New Smyrna Beach's William Baldwin and Deltona's Marc Fernandes were arrested as part of Operation Cyber Scumbag. The suspects range in age from 26 to 32, and they allegedly agreed to meet with what they thought were underage girls for sex. In Fernandez' case, the 26-year-old apparently thought he was meeting a 12-year-old. She and the other girls turned out to be undercover detectives. Sheriff Mike Chitwood says we're not going to stand by while predators try to lure kids away from their families to steal their innocence.
Son Of Orange County Sheriff Arrested
(Orlando, FL) --The son of the Orange County sheriff is facing criminal charges. Chase Mina was arrested this weekend for drunk driving in Winter Garden. Police say the 27-year-old was found in a pickup truck on the side of the road this weekend, slumped over the steering wheel with two open beers in the cup holders. He reportedly had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, but he refused to take a field sobriety test. Orange County Sheriff John Mina says this is a personal matter, and he expects the case to be handled like any other.
Alligator Hunting Season Underway In Florida
(Tallahassee, FL) --Alligator hunting season is underway in Florida. The season runs through November 1st. New this year, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has approved a rule change expanding hunting times to 24 hours a day. Another change is the addition of pre-charged pneumatic air guns firing an arrow as a new method of bagging a gator.
