Florida Takes Aim At Mask Requirements

(Tallahassee, FL)-- Florida is among nearly two dozen states going after mask requirements. State Attorney General Ashley Moody is asking an appeals court this week to uphold a previous ruling to block mask mandates on airplanes and public transportation. Moody's office calls the requirement by the CDC a violation of its authority. A Tampa-based judge originally blocked the order in April, but the agency has since appealed.

State Worries Quality Could Suffer Among Shortages

(Orlando, FL)-- There's a concern that education quality could suffer while schools struggle to hire teachers.  State Education Association President Andrew Spar says with more than eight-thousand vacancies statewide that means hundreds of thousands of kids are missing out on an education. Throughout the summer, districts have tried offering incentives for educators along with other staffing positions.

Parents Charged In Child's Death

(Kissimmee, FL)-- Two parents are facing charges in what the Osceola County sheriff calls one of the worst child abuse cases he has ever seen. Sheriff Marcos Lopez announced yesterday that Larry Rhodes and Bianca Blaise are charged with murder in the death of their six-year-old son at a hotel in Kissimmee. Investigators believe the couple beat the boy last month when they found him drinking from a toilet because he was thirsty.  The 25-year-old Blaise and 22-year-old Rhodes are also accused of beating and starving their five other children. Lopez calls the parents savages, and he says they kept the kids isolated in their room at the Knight's Inn and didn't allow them to go to school or make friends.  

Seminole County Man Could Get Death Penalty

(Viera, FL)-- A Seminole County man could get the death penalty for allegedly killing his daughter. State Attorney Phil Archer filed paperwork yesterday that indicates he'll push for the death penalty against Longwood's Juan Bravo-Torres. The 39-year-old allegedly stabbed his three-year-old and 12-year-old daughters last week at his home on Highland Street. Three-year-old Eva died, but the 12-year-old survived.Bravo-Torres was indicted on Tuesday for first-degree murder, and he was ordered held without bond until his arraignment on August 30th.  

Man Killed By Monroe County Deputies

(Key Largo, FL)-- A federal law enforcement officer is dead after he was shot by deputies in Monroe County. It happened yesterday morning in Key Largo at a home in the Ocean Resort subdivision. The sheriff's office says deputies were called to the home because Homeland Security's Lane Caviness was armed, drunk and suicidal. Sheriff Rick Ramsay says when the 48-year-old pointed an AR-15 rifle at deputies, they shot and killed him. Ramsay suspects this was a case of suicide by cop, but the FDLE is investigating. 

Man Saves Woman Who Drove Car Into Pool

(Lakeland, FL)-- A Polk County man credits his rescue training for helping a woman in distress. Maurice Dionne was home yesterday morning in Lakeland when a woman drove her SUV into a pool. Dionne ran to the pool, jumped in and with the help of a neighbor, freed the woman. She's OK, and Dionne tells News Channel 8 it brought him back to when he was 22 and in the Coast Guard.

Space Collectible Show Set For Saturday

(Cape Canaveral, FL)-- An upcoming event in Brevard County could be a fun one for space enthusiasts. The annual Space Collectible Show and Sale is set for Saturday at the Sands Space History Center in Cape Canaveral. Organizers hope the event will promote Space History. The free event will feature 20 vendor tables and food trucks. You can get more info at VisitSpaceCoast.com.

New York Governor Calls Florida Overrated

(Albany, NY)-- New York's governor is asking the state's Jews not to move to Florida.Kathy Hochul spoke yesterday at a ceremony to celebrate a Holocaust education bill. She said she just wanted to thank the almost two million Jews that call New York home, and she urged them not to move to another state like Florida, which she called overrated. She then said look at the governor, meaning Ron DeSantis, and added 'it starts at the top down.' A spokesperson for DeSantis' campaign said Hochul should spend more time relieving her people of oppressive taxes, needless mandates, shuttered businesses and crime-infested cities. He also tells the New York Post Florida's freedom agenda works, and Hochul should try it.

Florida Woman Charged For Throwing Raw Steak During Argument

(Tampa, FL)-- A Florida woman is facing domestic assault charges after allegedly throwing a raw steak at her boyfriend. Rochelle Wright and her parter were both reportedly intoxicated and fighting when the incident occurred. Wright told officers she was "tired of his behavior and their arguing" when she picked up the raw steak and threw it at him. The meat didn't hit the man, instead striking a wall. Wright was arrested for domestic assault and booked in the Pinellas County jail on Sunday, but was released the next day. 

NYC Squirrels Acting Funny Because Of Heat

(New York, NY) --The heat has squirrels in New York City acting a little funny. The parks department posted a picture on Twitter of a furry guy sprawled out in the shade. Officials said not to worry, explaining squirrels like to keep cool by splooting - or stretching out - on cool surfaces. That's how they reduce body heat, which is sometimes referred to as heat dumping.
