Five Dead In Murder-Suicide At Orlando Home

(Orlando, FL) --Orlando police say five people are dead in an apparent murder-suicide. Two of the victims are reportedly children. Officers were called to the scene at a home on Lake District Lane in the East Park neighborhood of Lake Nona yesterday afternoon. The investigation is ongoing.

$100,000 Of Jewelry Stolen From Tampa Mall

(Tampa, FL) --Tampa police are looking for the people who stole more than one-hundred-thousand-dollars worth of jewelry yesterday. Three men were seen stealing the jewelry on security cameras and a fourth was waiting for them outside in a getaway car. The incident happened at the Diamond Galleria in the Citrus Park Town Center mall around 1:30 p.m.

Miami Accountants Accused Of Stealing Thousands Of Tax Return Dollars

(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Two South Florida accountants are accused of stealing thousands of tax return dollars from their clients. Miami-Dade authorities said yesterday that 50-year-old Juan Mendieta and 26-year-old Leandro Machado Gonzalez have been arrested on money laundering, organized scheme to defraud, and grand theft charges. The two men own the accounting firm Famous Accounting, Inc. in Miami.

Masks Recommended In Courthouses

(Sarasota, FL) --Residents across the Gulf Coast are once again being advised to wear masks in courthouse buildings. The 12th Circuit Court serves Manatee, Sarasota and DeSoto counties and is recommending people wear masks when visiting courthouses. The recommendation came on Monday after a surge in COVID-19 cases in the area. The measure is classified as "highly recommended" alongside social distancing although neither is officially required.

Victim Impact Statements Continue In Nikolas Cruz School Shooting Trial

(Ft. Lauderdale, FL) -- More emotional impact statements were read yesterday in the Nikolas Cruz penalty trial in Fort Lauderdale. The jurors will be hearing impact statements from relatives of all 17 victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland. The jury has been instructed to not consider the victim impact statements as aggravating factors in whether they recommend life in prison or the death penalty for Nikolas Cruz.

Commission Assessing School Safety Ahead Of New Year

(Sunrise, FL) -- The commission created in response to the tragedy at the Parkland massacre finds there is still work to be done to make kids safer on campus. Marjory Stoneman Douglas High Public Safety Commission Chair Sheriff Bob Gualtieri says not every school is in full compliance of Alyssa's Alert Panic Alarm System. He acknowledges adaption will always be needed. Tragedies like this will happen again, he says, so it's more about stopping a mass casualty event once it starts. 

NFL Punishes Miami Dolphins Following Investigation

(Miami, FL) --The Miami Dolphins are under fire from the NFL following a policy investigation. The league concluded the Dolphins violated rules connected to tampering with Tom Brady while he was under contract in 2019 and again in 2021.Now the team's owner Stephen Ross will remain suspended until October 17th. The team will also forfeit the club's first-round pick in next year's draft and a third-round selection in the 2024 Draft. Ross says he disagrees with the outcome, but will accept it in order to avoid distraction for the team as they continue practices.

Bear Broke Into West Hartford Home Twice

(West Hartford, CT) -- State environmental officials are trying to locate and capture a bear that broke into the same Connecticut house twice last week. The first break in happened July 25th, and conservation police told the homeowners to close the main doors of the house for a week. The bear returned on July 31st and forced its way through a screen door, and was chased back outside by the homeowner. Environmental officials are setting traps in the area in hopes of capturing the bear and transporting it to a safe location.

1984, Olympic U.S. gymnast Mary Lou Retton scored a perfect 10.00, accomplishing what no American woman gymnast ever had. She captured the gold medal in all-around gymnastics. She had to score a perfect 10.00 because her Russian competitor had just landed a 9.9.

1981, 13 thousand air traffic controllers in the U.S. went on strike, defying an order by President Reagan. The strike went on, causing cancellations of nearly 15 thousand flights. Reagan fired those who defied his order after 48 hours of striking.

1933, the Mickey Mouse Watch was introduced to consumers. The watch sold for two dollars and 75 cents.
