Wawa Settles Lawsuit With Florida Over Data Breach

(Tallahassee, FL) -- Wawa is giving the state of Florida more than one-million dollars in a data breach settlement. The gas station chain agreed to pay up in order to end a multistate investigation that compromised up to 34-million cardholders back in 2019. Attorney General Ashley Moody is planning to use the money toward improving consumer protection and privacy enforcement. Victims will not get any of the cut since the deadline to apply was last November and the class-action lawsuit was not publicly announced in the state. Since the breach, Wawa has replaced its card payment software with more secure chip readers.

Commissioner Nikki Fried Rolls Out Gun Safety Initiative

(Tallahassee, FL) -- More ways to increase gun safety are coming to Florida. State Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried is rolling out a new initiative called the "Be Safe" campaign. Now with every concealed weapons permit her department issues, information about safe storage will be included. The campaign is also promoting safety devices for firearms. Fried says it will help save lives since guns are the leading cause of death among children and teenagers in the nation.

Florida Among Limited Areas With Long COVID Treatment

(The Villages, FL) -- A treatment in Central Florida is preventing long-term impacts of COVID-19. Researchers from Tel Aviv University say a clinic found in The Villages is the only place in the U.S. offering the successful therapy. Aviv Clinics are using hyperbaric oxygen therapy over an eight week period. This administers oxygen through a mask, giving patients 17 times more air than the normal amount. Officials say this helps prevent the brain from sustaining long-term damage after contracting the virus.

Serial Bank Robber Sentenced To 27 Years in Prison

(Orlando, FL) -- A Florida bank robber has been sentenced to nearly 30 years in federal prison. Fifty-year-old Raul Reyes-Vasquez, of Tampa, was sentenced yesterday to 27 years and three months. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Reyes-Vazquez committed multiple bank robberies in Miami in 2006. He was sentenced for those robberies in 2019. He also committed robberies in Manhattan in 2008 and in Orlando, as recently as February of this year.

Human Bones Discovered At Flagler County Construction Site

(Palm Coast, FL)-- Anthropologists at the University of South Florida are investigating human remains found at a construction site in Flagler County recently.Last week, contractors halted construction at the Tuscana development site after a femur was found at the site.The Flagler County Sheriff's Office confirmed yesterday that two femurs and fragments of skull and a jaw bone were also uncovered. A team of more than two dozen was still working the site Wednesday, searching for anything else that could help investigators.  

Brightline Making Progress On High-Speed Rail

(Brevard County, FL) --Brightline says they are making progress on the high-speed rail connection between Miami and Orlando. A new round of testing began yesterday, and for the first time, high speeds of nearly 80 miles per hour were reached. The testing is part of the certification process for the two sets of tracks and the crossings. Crews are currently working on seven railroad crossings in Rockledge and Melbourne.

Governor Calls Drag Restaurant "Wrong" After Complaint Over Children Attending Shows

(Miami, FL)-- Governor Ron DeSantis is filing a complaint against a Wynwood drag restaurant after video of children at the popular eatery was posted on social media.The governor said in a press conference Wednesday that kids attending drag shows is "wrong" and "not consistent with... law and policy in the state of Florida." The video was described as showing "nearly nude" dancers at the R House, one who was holding hands with a kid carrying cash.The governor even noted that agents found a children's menu at the bar of the establishment.

Murder Hornet Gets New Name

(Olympia, WA)-- The murder hornet's life of crime is over. The Entomological Society of America says it plans to rebrand the insect as the northern giant hornet. The Washington State Department of Agriculture will adopt the name change.The northern giant hornet was first sighted in North America in Washington in 2019. The insect can grow to more than two inches long and, with multiple stings, can kill a human. 

Gators Warning From Zoo Officials After Three Recent Attacks

(Tampa, FL)-- Wildlife experts are urging residents and visitors to the Bay area not to feed alligators. The most recent warning comes on the heels of three gator attacks, the latest involving a 13-year-old girl in Hardee County. Officials with Zoo Tampa say when people feed gators, the animals lose their natural fear of humans, making it dangerous for anyone nearby.
