Unemployment Drops Across Florida

(Tallahassee, FL) --The unemployment rate is moving downward across the state of Florida. Yesterday Florida's Department of Economic Opportunity reported the unemployment rate for June was two-point-eight percent compared to June 2021's rate of four-point-eight. The report says just over three-hundred thousand people currently unemployed compares with nearly five-hundred thousand in the same period of 2021.

Fight Causes Scare at Universal Orlando, Prompts Police to Clear Citywalk

(Orlando, FL) --Police cleared out Universal Orlando Citywalk this weekend after a fight broke out among several juveniles in a parking lot.  Rumors spread quickly about an active shooter in the park that turned the Saturday night incident into chaos. Orlando Police confirmed there were no shots fired and no weapons were found.  

Fireworks Mistaken for Gunshots, Cause Panic at Florida Mall

(Orlando, FL) --Police in Orlando say fireworks were mistaken for gunshots this weekend and sparked a panic at Florida Mall. The loud noises on Saturday scared shoppers and sent many running for the exits. Nobody was hurt. Police posted online that no shots had been fired in the incident.   

Suspect Opened Fire On Two Officers In Sneads

(Sneads, FL) --A suspect is dead and an officer wounded after a shooting in Sneads over the weekend. Early Saturday morning, around 8 a.m., a deputy with Jackson County Sheriff's Office and a Sneads Police officers responded to a disturbance off of Mckeown Mill Road. When they arrived, the 42-year-old male suspect opened fire, hitting the Sneads officer. The suspect was shot dead at the scene while the officer is recovering and expected to survive.

Car Crashes Into Toll Booth at Daytona Beach International Speedway Boulevard, Injuring Four, Including Child

(Daytona Beach, FL) -- Four people -- including a child -- are recovering from injuries they suffered when a car crashed into a toll booth on the International Speedway Boulevard yesterday.The car wound up in the ocean and the driver was rescued. Nobody was in the toll booth at the time. Both the child and the driver suffered trauma and were rushed to area hospitals. Police are investigating what caused the crash. 

South Florida Seeing Most Monkeypox Cases in State

(Fort Lauderdale, FL) -- The World Health Organization has declared monkeypox a public health emergency and South Florida is seeing the most cases of the virus in the state. The WHO reports 16-thousand cases have been confirmed across 75 countries. In Florida, state health officials say South Florida is the epicenter for monkeypox. They've recorded 247 cases over the last week. There are 129 cases reported in Broward County and 71 cases in Miami-Dade County. Monkeypox is spread through contact with an infected person but is not as contagious as COVID-19.

Florida's Back-To-School Sales Tax Holiday Begins Today

(Tallahassee, FL) --Florida's back-to-school sales tax holiday begins today and runs for two weeks through Sunday, August 7th.Shoppers are spared the six percent sales tax rate on purchases of clothing, footwear and accessories selling for 100 dollars or less. Also included are school supplies selling for no more than 50 dollars, and personal computers and accessories priced at 15-hundred dollars or less. Taxable items include computer paper, watches, duffel bags and athletic gloves.

Florida Man Tried To Warn Government Of Dragons And Aliens Before Arrest

(Brevard County, FL) -- The Brevard County Sheriff's Office says a man was trying to "warn" the government when he drove a stolen pickup truck to Patrick Air Force Base. Twenty-nine-year-old Corey Johnson reportedly tried to get on the base Friday night to warn officials about a fight between Chinese dragons and U.S. aliens. Johnson further claimed he was sent by the president. He's facing grand theft charges and possibly more as the investigation is ongoing.

Chess Robot Breaks Child's Finger

(Moscow) --  A chess robot will likely be reprogramed after breaking a seven-year-old boy's finger during a match. It happened last week at the Moscow Chess Open. The boy went to make a move when the robot's mechanical arm grabbed his finger and clamped down. Adults rushed in to help free the boy's hand. The president of the Moscow Chess Federation said the boy apparently rushed to move before the robot was ready.
