Florida Judge Blocks 15-Week Abortion Ban, State Reinstates Law
(Tallahassee, FL) -- Florida's 15-week abortion law will remain in effect until it reaches a higher court. A Tallahassee judge issued a temporary block on the order yesterday. However, it was quickly reversed after the state filed an appeal. The law bans most abortions after 15-weeks without exceptions for rape or incest. Judge John Cooper ruled that the legislation was unconstitutional last week as part of a court challenge by Planned Parenthood.
Wrong-Way Driver Charged In Deadly Crash In Brevard County
(Merritt Island, FL)-- Alcohol is suspected in a deadly wrong-way crash in Brevard County.FHP says a drunk driver was going the wrong way on SR 520 in Merritt Island yesterday morning when he collided with a Prius, which then hit a concrete wall. Cape Canaveral 35-year-old Dane DeWitt was driving the Prius, and he was killed. The other driver was identified as Merritt Island 35-year-old Damian Dobrosielski. He's charged with DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide.
Apopka Police Officer Facing DUI Charge
(Apopka, FL)-- A police officer is facing drunk driving charges in Lake County. Apopka Police Officer Oscar Mayorga was arrested Monday night in Eustis. The 25-year-old was pulled over while in uniform and in his marked cruiser, and Eustis Police say they found an open container in his cup holder. Officers say he also smelled of alcohol and had trouble with his balance once he got out of the car. His blood alcohol level was point-391, which is almost five times the legal limit. Apopka Police placed the five-year veteran on paid administrative leave.
Walton County Commissioners Accused Of Misusing Funds
(DeFuniak Springs, FL)-- Walton County commissioners are promising wholesale changes after an audit into their spending practices. The audit released last week found that each of the five members misused funds through county-issued purchasing cards, or P-cards. In a statement, the board said the audit revealed a systemic breakdown of policies within the prior administration. Board members also say they look forward to fully addressing these issues and adopting solutions in the coming weeks.
Brevard School District Discussing Budget Solutions
(Melbourne, FL) -- Brevard County Schools is considering plans to help the district's budget issues. Two board members have brought up the possibility of consolidating small schools. School Board Chair Misty Belford says Brevard has about 20 more schools than Seminole County for the same number of students. Each facility costs about one-million dollars to operate per year. The district says no official talks have started and hopes they never do.
