NASA Holds Wet Dress Rehearsal For SLS Rocket
(Cape Canaveral, FL)-- NASA is celebrating what it calls a very successful day at Kennedy Space Center. A wet dress rehearsal was held Monday for a Space Launch System rocket as part of the Artemis One mission. While it was aborted with about 20 seconds to go, the launch director said yesterday a majority of the objectives were accomplished that were not completed in the prior wet dress rehearsal. NASA is reviewing the data from Monday and will determine whether to do another test.Under the Artemis program, a woman and a person of color will reach the surface of the moon for the first time ever.
Three Hurt In Fiery Crash Landing At MIA
(Miami, FL)-- Three people are hurt after a fiery crash landing at Miami International Airport. It happened around 5:30 p.m. yesterday after a RED Air flight from the Dominican Republic experienced a problem with its landing gear. Airport officials say the MD-82 skidded to a stop on the grass, caught fire and spilled fuel on the runway. Over 100 people were on board, and three were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Two runways were closed following the crash, and several flight delays were reported.The FAA is investigating. Once passenger told Local10 News that at one point the place was moving side to side, a window cracked and she saw the wing catch fire.
Florida Gets Funding For Railroad Safety
(Miami, FL) -- Florida is getting money to make its railroads safer. More than two-million dollars in federal funding is going out among 13 states, including Florida, to combat the rise in train-related deaths. Rail stations will get funding toward outreach programs. While, law enforcement officers in several major cities will use their money toward for trespassing and traffic enforcement near railways.
Women Shot At In Volusia County
(DeLand, FL)-- A search is underway to find a man who shot at two women in Volusia County.FHP says shots were fired Sunday morning at a car the women were in on I-4 near mile marker 118. Their car was hit eight times, and the women had to pull over on the shoulder when the car broke down. They weren't hurt, though. The shooter fled the scene, and FHP says they're looking for a dark-colored, older model Nissan Altima sedan.
Brevard County Woman Arrested On Hate Crime Charges
(New York, NY)-- A Brevard County woman is facing hate crime charges in New York.Merritt Island's Madeline Barker was arraigned Saturday for an incident that took place over a week ago in the Meatpacking District. New York Police say the 47-year-old pepper sprayed four Asian women in their 20s after an argument in which she made anti-Asian remarks. No serious injuries were reported. Barker is due back in court on Thursday.
Suspect Arrested In Deadly Volusia County Shooting
(DeLand, FL)-- The search for a Volusia County murder suspect is over. The sheriff's office announced last night that Sammy McKnight, Jr. was arrested in Daytona Beach for a deadly shooting near an IHOP in DeBary last week. The 31-year-old is charged with second-degree murder. A five-thousand dollar reward was issued for whoever could lead deputies to McKnight, and Sheriff Mike Chitwood says he'll be ecstatic to hand over that check to the person who recognized McKnight and called authorities.
Man Charged With Manslaughter In Publix Shooting
(Hollywood, FL)-- A Publix security guard is facing charges after a deadly shooting in Broward County. Hollywood Police say Andre Grey turned himself in on Saturday after a shooting over a week ago at a Publix on Polk Street. The 44-year-old apparently knew the man and was in a fight with him before the shooting. The alleged victim has not been identified.
Laundrie Family Seeks To Have Petito Lawsuit Dismissed
(Sarasota, FL)-- A lawsuit filed by Gabby Petito's family against Brian Laundrie's family will be the subject of a court hearing in Sarasota County today.Lawyers for Laundrie's parents will ask a judge to dismiss the suit. Petito's parents claim that Laundrie's parents knew that Brian killed Gabby but didn't tell police. The Petito's accuse the Laundrie's of causing pain and mental anguish, and they're asking for at least 100-thousand dollars in damages. The Laundries' lawyer tells Fox 13 News there's no legal requirement for the Laundries to communicate things that they may or may not know.
JSO Warns To 'Lower Your Radio Volume'
(Jacksonville, FL)-- The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has a warning for drivers. A state law taking effect July First will make it illegal to play your radio so loud that it's plainly audible at a distance of 25 feet or more. The JSO Tweeted yesterday, 'lower your radio volume.' They tell News4Jax non-compliance is punishable as a non-moving violation.
Massive Sun Spot Could Cause Solar Flares, Radio Blackouts
(Undated) -- A large sun spot facing towards Earth could cause radio blackouts if it bursts.Scientists are watching a dark spot on the surface of the sun that's doubled in size this week. They say it could result in a solar flare that contains high amounts of radiation and magnetic energy. That flare might impact the upper levels of Earth's atmosphere that are used for communication signals, which in turn could lead to radio and navigation system blackouts. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, estimates there's a ten-percent chance of such a flare happening soon.
