Here’s a recap of the week…
MONDAY
Strife, it seems to be everywhere we turn. Political, social, faith, family- you name it, we find a way to be spun up about it.Finally, we begin a HANDBASKET story with a win on the social front. Business has a right to conduct business without employee causes getting in the way. It’s about time.
Remember the months after 9/11? First responders, cops, firefighters and others, were paraded out and heralded at sporting events and more for their dedication and heroism in the face of insurmountable odds. What a difference a couple of decades can make. We’ve gone from recognizing the everyday sacrifices these professionals make to whining about any symbols of support. Wichita State is today’s example.
We have described it as our country’s foundations being under attack, but it’s more than that.I can understand protesters around a court house or other government building. It’s kind of in our DNA. But it’s gone far beyond that with individuals serving in America’s institutions being targeted. And it’s not just them; it’s their families and places of worship in the terror zone as well.
And as we react to mass shootings, and far too many of them, we have learned no lessons about acting quickly just to be acting. It happens when elected officials believe they are the only solution to whatever problem is at hand. Can honest solution seeking come into play?
Let’s get our talk week started.
TUESDAY
Dave Bowman is back in hour three as we look at Flag Day. It’s not something I have given much thought but Dave sees it, as he usually does, with a unique eye. In Dave’s words,
“On June 14, 1937, the state of Pennsylvania did something that, to date, no other state has decided to do. In declaring June 14th a state holiday, Pennsylvania was making a statement that - in our times - has proved to be controversial and perhaps even quaint.”
We’ll see what Dave means with DAVE DOES HISTORY.
The mayor of Washington, DC has done something for Flag Day. She’s living in her own world.
We’ll begin the day with Buzz Lightyear IN A HANDBASKET. The ‘Toy Story’ star has his own movie coming out this week and it’s not without its share of controversy. Why kids’ movies can’t be just for kids is beyond me.
AG Merrick Garland is getting pressure to protect the Supreme Court Justices and their families by simply doing his job and enforcing the law. It’s not just the justices’ families being impacted.
WEDNESDAY
As we begin your day to control our direction of travel we’ll take a look at even the left being tired of the antics of their side on the 2022 election. Saturday Night Live’s Michael Che, a leftist comedian, says it quite well. Maybe we can find a starting point where we agree.
After that, it’s up to you. WIDE OPEN WEDNESDAY gives you the chance to bring up any topic that has your attention. It happens when you call the show at 321.768.1240.
On my mind…it appears congress will move toward more gun control in the country. Just like the Florida Legislature after Parkland, a kneejerk reaction by lawmakers won’t make anyone safer and will curb the ability of law abiding citizens to protect themselves. It’s funny to watch Democrats clamor for gun control, but shy away from protecting Supreme Court justices. And, the National School Boards Association went too far in calling parents domestic terrorists. They are now bleeding membership and of less relevance than ever, but where are the leaders in education that will stand up for what’s right for our kids? They are glaringly absent.
THURSDAY
In a country where we had believed race issues were subsiding, we have learned that is not the case. Part of that problem is the propensity of some to see race issues where they do not exist. We begin our day there. Also IN A HANDBASKET are stories of erasing history and the Juneteenth federal holiday where apparently segregation is the rule of the day.
In Washington State we have had a mostly peaceful arson. In Washington, DC it seems there’s a wrench in the bipartisan deal to enact more gun laws.
Apparently the coming midterm red wave drives a Tesla and flies a Falcon 9 rocket. And Ron DeSantis’ reaction to Elon Musk’s stated probable support is raising an eyebrow or two. Also here at home, a story about a lawsuit over the Stoneman-Douglas school safety commission’s reports has me wondering just what schools are trying to hide.
Florida Today Engagement Editor John Torres is with us in hour three today. He’s still getting back in the swing of things after an amazing vacation. We’ll catch up together on some local issues.
FRIDAY
With a long weekend ahead we’ll catch up on several things as we close our talk week. We’ll start IN A HANDBASKET where VP Harris has a new job. She’s just as likely to succeed in it as she was in closing the border and stopping the war in Ukraine.
Elon Musk is making news again. This time he’s talked to Twitter employees and it included his thoughts on space and aliens.
The US Capitol police Chief has crashed a black helicopter that was flown by Democrats on the January 6 events. They would stop at nothing to convince people of their deceit. Speaking of, crooked Congresswoman and convict Corrine Brown is running for congress again. Let’s hope voters are not that stupid. President Biden threatened to use executive action against oil companies to generate more production. Then, the inept president was hit with the cold hard facts of oil production.
The company is off for the Juneteenth holiday on Monday and I have a meeting in Orlando on Tuesday. Joe Pags will step into those mornings and I’ll talk to you next week on WIDE OPEN WEDNESDAY.
