Nonprofit Under Investigation For Ties To Ghost Candidates
(Tallahassee, FL) - A nonprofit is being investigated for its possible ties to a scheme to fund ghost candidates in local elections. Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Secretary Nikki Fried announced yesterday her office is investigating Let's Preserve the American Dream for possibly violating state law regarding nonprofits, but she gave no details. The group is also the subject of a criminal investigation in Miami. Prosecutors claim the group donated to another group that paid for mailers to promote independent left-leaning candidates who did no actual campaigning. Those candidates got just enough votes in some races to help Republican candidates claim narrow victories.
Teen Shooting Suspect Appears In Court
(Sanford, FL) - A teenage shooting suspect will have to spend the next few weeks behind bars in Seminole County. Sixteen-year-old Da'raveius [[duh-RAY-vee-us]] Smith was in court yesterday after he allegedly shot an 18-year-old student at Seminole High School on Wednesday. A judge ordered Smith to remain behind bars for 30 days until his arraignment on February 14th. Smith is charged with attempted murder.
Three Suspects Wanted For Violent Home Invasion In Jacksonville
(Jacksonville, FL) - A search is underway to find three people involved in a violent home invasion in Jacksonville. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says the three broke into a home yesterday morning on Overland Park Boulevard. A man found inside the home had been shot, but he's expected to survive. A girl in the home was able to escape through a window and run to a neighbor's house to call police. The JSO says this was not a random incident.
Alcohol Involved In Mask Dispute On MIA Flight
(Miami, FL) - Alcohol may be partly to blame for a disturbance on a flight out of Miami International Airport. American Airlines Flight 38 was en route to London Wednesday when it turned around and returned to MIA because a couple refused to wear masks. A source tells CBS4 News the couple appeared to be drunk. No one was arrested, but the woman was put on the airline's banned passenger list.
Deputies: Driver Snorted Cocaine To Get Rid Of The Evidence
(Johnson County, AR) -- Arkansas authorities say a driver who fled a traffic stop on I-40 was snorting cocaine in order to get rid of the evidence. The Johnson County Sheriff's department says the incident began when they tried to pull over a vehicle near the Franklin County line earlier this month. When the driver was eventually stopped, the unidentified man, who was out on bond for drug charges in Fayetteville, admitted he'd thrown some bags of cocaine out the window while driving and had been snorting the rest. A search of the vehicle also recovered 63 Fentanyl pills.
MLB Kills Rays' Sister City Plans
(St. Petersburg, FL) - The Tampa Bay Rays are dealing with what their owner calls deflating news. Owner Stu Sternberg announced yesterday that Major League Baseball has killed his plan to have the Rays play home games here and in Montreal. Sternberg has been promoting the Sister City plan for a couple years, and despite yesterday's news, he predicts it'll be the wave of the future in pro sports. The Rays lease at Tropicana Field runs through 2027, and the franchise's future plans are uncertain.
Man Hurt In Bear Encounter In Volusia County
(Daytona Beach, FL) - A man is hurt after a bear encounter in Volusia County. It happened Wednesday night in Daytona Beach while the man was walking his dogs. He's expected to survive, and his dogs were not hurt. The FWC says if it finds the bear, it'll be euthanized because it poses a threat to human safety.
WV Reporter Gets Hit By A Car During Live Broadcast, Finishes Report
(Charleston, WV) -- A West Virginia TV reporter was hit by a car during a live broadcast and got up and finished her report. Tori Yorgey of WSAZ in Charleston was reporting on a water main break Wednesday when she was sideswiped by an SUV and went flying into the camera. The diligent reporter quickly got up and said, "I just got hit by a car, but I'm OK." After composing herself, Yorgey said "It's all good," and finished her report.
