Tampa Man Arrested For January 6th Riot Professes Innocence
(Clearwater, FL) - One year after the January 6th riot, a Tampa man continues to profess his innocence. Jeremy Brown was arrested in September on charges that include disrupting the orderly conduct of government business. While other defendants have pleaded guilty, the retired Green Beret is insisting on a trial. He recently told 8 On Your Side he wasn't anywhere near the Capitol when it got breached, and he hopes his trial will expose the political factors at play in his arrest.
DeSantis Comments On January 6th Anniversary
(West Palm Beach, FL) - The anniversary of the January 6th riot isn't something the governor gave much thought to. Governor Ron DeSantis said yesterday the media coverage of the breach on the Capitol was a politicized Charlie Foxtrot. He also says it's not something that concerns him because it doesn't concern most Floridians. DeSantis adds Floridians are concerned about issues like jobs, education and inflation, and he wishes Congress would be concerned about those pressing issues as well.
Florida AG Warns Of Fake COVID Test Sites
(Tallahassee, FL) -- Florida's attorney general is warning of COVID-19 testing scammers. Ashley Moody says people are looking to steal victims' personal, financial or medical information. The office has received reports of fake test sites, people impersonating health-care workers at legitimate sites, and at-home testing scams. They say when buying COVID-19 tests for use at home, stick with well-established, legitimate stores and websites.
Arrest Made After Hostage Situation In Jacksonville
(Jacksonville, FL) - A man is in custody after a hostage situation in Jacksonville. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office arrested Gabriel Enrique Campla yesterday after the incident at Serenity Spa on Southside Boulevard. The 33-year-old apparently entered the spa and ordered everyone to leave, but one female employee remained. She was eventually able to escape unharmed, and the JSO arrested Campla with the help of a SWAT team negotiator and a K9 officer.
Bank Robbery Suspect Caught In Broward County
(Margate, FL) - A bank robbery suspect who drove at dangerously high speeds to avoid capture is in custody. The man allegedly robbed a bank in Margate on North SR 7 yesterday. He's accused of driving over 130 miles an hour on the Florida Turnpike into Miami-Dade County before stopping in Opa-locka. He was arrested at a home. There were no injuries in the incident.
Manatee County Family Threatens To Sue Over Child's Arrest
(Bradenton, FL) - The arrest of a child could lead to a lawsuit against Manatee County. Twelve-year-old JaQuyla [[ juh-QUAIL-uh ]] Jones was arrested four months ago for allegedly pushing a deputy who was responding to a fight involving other students at Palm View K-through-8 in Palmetto. The sheriff's office says the deputy did nothing wrong, but lawyers for Jones' family say the arrest violates her civil rights, and they have filed an intent to sue against the sheriff's office, the school district and the county. They also say that as a special needs student, Jones is traumatized by what happened.
Polk County Business Owner Arrested For Fraud
(Winter Haven, FL) - A Polk County business owner accused of fraud insists she's not a thief. Angel Ruiz owns Border Control Fencing in Winter Haven, and she was arrested last month for allegedly taking money from customers but never doing the work she promised. Ruiz blames supply chain problems, and she tells 8 On Your Side she didn't have the money to pay everyone back. She's charged with grand theft and scheming to defraud.
Scientists Teach Goldfish To Drive 'Fish-Operated Vehicle'
(Israel) -- A group of scientists are training goldfish to drive what they call a "fish operated vehicle." The study, conducted by researchers at Ben-Guiron University of the Negev in Israel, aims to see if goldfish's navigational skills would work on land. A small goldfish tank was placed on a set of wheels,with the vehicle using a camera and remote sensing system that moves whatever direction the goldfish swims. The researchers trained the fish to move the FOV towards targets with a food reward in return. A press release from the study authors said it appeared "navigational ability is universal rather than specific to the environment."
