Tear Gas Used To Disperse Protesters Who Violated Curfew
(Orlando, FL) -- One person is facing charges after a mostly peaceful protest in Orlando. Police say a 29-year-old man tried to stab officers with a syringe. While no major problems were reported in the seven-hour rally, things got tense last night at city hall as some protesters refused to comply with the curfew. They threw rocks and bottles at police, and police used tear gas to break up the crowd.
Protest Held In Volusia County
(DeLand, FL) -- Those protesting police brutality are finding allies in the law enforcement community in Volusia County. A rally was held last night in DeLand to protest the death of George Floyd. Sheriff Mike Chitwood praised the rally at the Historic Courthouse. He tells the News-Journal Floyd's death isn't what law enforcement is about, and Floyd's death wasn't about training but about being a human being. Protests in Brevard have reportedly been trouble free.
Man Arrested For Attacking Police And K9
(St. Petersburg, FL) -- A man is accused of inciting a riot in St. Petersburg. Police yesterday arrested Jordan Mosby after an incident at a gas station on 34th Street South. Police say the 29-year-old tried to get others at the gas station to start a riot, and he allegedly threw a newspaper stand at a window. While police tried to arrest him, they say he fought with officers and a K9 before he was taken into custody.
Miami-Dade Police Request: Keep Curfew
(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Miami-Dade police want to keep a curfew in place. Police Director Freddy Ramirez told commissioners the 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew is a precaution in case the rampant weekend violence and looting flares up again. Since this weekend, there have been mostly peaceful demonstrations over the death of George Floyd while in the custody of Minneapolis Police.
I-95 Interchange Opens In Brevard County
(Melbourne, FL) -- A project expected to make a big difference in part of Brevard County is complete. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held yesterday for the new I-95 interchange at Ellis Road. The project cost almost 40 million dollars, and it's designed to help residents get to Orlando Melbourne International Airport faster. Congressman Bill Posey says this will allow the airport to maximize its potential.
Guinness World Record Set for High Library Late Fee
(Kewanee, IL) -- Late fees at libraries can add up. That's what one Illinois woman found out as she paid one so high, it was recorded in the Guinness World Record books. Emily Cannellos-Simms paid over 345-dollars after she returned "Day and Deeds" to the Kewanee Public Library. Ironically, she never checked book out. It was found in her mother's house and had a due date of April 15th, 1955.
Politically Neutral Newscast Coming On September 1st
(Dallas, TX) -- W-G-N America is promising its new newscast will be non-partisan. It plans to debut News Nation on September 1st. Executive Vice President Sean Compton says his company has done extensive research and found a large audience is seeking a news service without a political opinion. The company hired local journalists who have not been at opinionated networks. News Nation is considered a gamble by W-G-N and it's parent company Nextstar Media Group. It has received negative feedback from researchers at Arizona State University, saying it will be difficult to break the viewing habits that have become common over the years.
Study: Safe Sex Involves Face Masks
(Cambridge, MA) -- Safe sex during the COVID-19 pandemic involves many things, with wearing a face mask chief among them. A new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine reviews and lists sex acts that may lead to the spread of the coronavirus. The Harvard University researchers say anyone that wants to have sex with those they're not quarantined with should wear a mask, avoid kissing, and not do anything involving bodily fluids. The study also says limited risk is involved with in-house partners as someone could become infected while out shopping or at their job. Unsurprisingly, researchers believe the safest pandemic sex act is done alone, though abstinence beats them all.
