Volusia Mayors Meet To Discuss Rejection Of Sales Tax Referendum
(Daytona Beach, FL) -- Volusia County's mayors are doing some soul searching after suffering a defeat at the ballot box. The mayors met yesterday in Daytona Beach for the first time since voters last month rejected a sales tax hike that would have paid for road projects. Port Orange Mayor Don Burnette says voters showed they don't trust local officials, and Holly Hill Mayor Chris Via says lawmakers need to start listening better. The mayors discussed adopting smart growth initiatives, and Oak Hill Mayor Douglas Gibson urged his colleagues to have another vote, maybe next year, on the sales tax hike.
Graham Backs Opening Democratic Primary
(Orlando, FL) -- A former Panhandle congresswoman wants to change how Democrats elect their presidential nominee. Gwen Graham Tweeted this weekend that the party's primary should be open to all voters, regardless of party affiliation. At a Democratic Party conference this weekend in Orlando, officials discussed but did not approve opening the primary. Graham says opening the Democratic primary will lead to a stronger general election candidate who can win in November.
Former Mayor Denied Bail
(Port Richey, FL) -- A former mayor will remain behind bars in Pasco County. A judge yesterday refused to set bail for former Port Richey Mayor Dale Massad. He was arrested over three months ago for charges that include attempted murder. Prosecutors say he fired two shots at deputies who were trying to raid his home for allegedly practicing medicine without a license.
Bear Seen In Brevard County
(Titusville, FL) -- Two recent incidents should be a warning for some Brevard County residents. Two bear sightings were reported this weekend in Titusville. The more recent sighting happened Sunday in a parking lot around US One and Deleon Avenue. The day before, a woman saw a bear outside her home in Imperial Estates, and she tells Fox 35 the bear was only about five feet away in her driveway before it walked away.
Brevard County's Harris Trying To Help Team USA In WWC
(Satellite Beach, FL) -- Brevard County will be represented when Team USA takes the field today for the Women's World Cup. Satellite High grad Ashlyn Harris is expected to start in goal against Thailand in France. The 34-year-old helped Team USA win the World Cup four years ago.When she's not playing for the US, she plays goal for the Orlando Pride in the National Women's Soccer League.
FSU To Play Arkansas In CWS
(Tallahassee, FL) -- For Florida State to win the College World Series, they'll have to do something they've never done before. The Seminoles found out yesterday they'll play their first tournament game against Arkansas. The Noles have never beaten the Razorbacks in five tries, though their last meeting was 10 years ago. The game is set for Saturday night at 7:00 in Omaha on ESPN.
Times Square Getting A 24/7 Krispy Kreme
(New York, NY) -- Times Square already has an Olive Garden and a Sbarro, and now it's adding doughnuts. Krispy Kreme is planning to open a new location at 48th Street and Broadway. The flagship location will be open 24/7 so "The City That Never Sleeps" will always have access to glazed doughnuts. The chain says the location will have a glaze waterfall, merchandise, and stadium-style seating. It'll start serving customers early next year.
