In my teenage years, and maybe a good bit beyond, Ford Motor Company had one of the best advertising slogans I can remember: “Ford has a better idea.” A naked lightbulb lighting up became the icon attached to the campaign. And it was effective. We believed that Ford did have a better idea.
Well, now the lights are on, but I am not certain anyone is home at Ford. They announced this week that the company will focus on trucks and SUVs for 86% of Ford volume sales. They will stop producing sedans other than the Mustang and a 2019 Focus Active that isn’t even available yet.
Other manufacturers are making similar noises as they respond to what seems to be the desires of the market. People are going practical as crossovers and SUVs are gaining popularity. They also bring huge profits to the manufacturers.
I can’t help but wonder if they are missing the mark…or maybe I am just missing the Torino, Monte Carlo, Nova and Barracuda…or even a Pinto.
I just can’t buy that this is a better idea.
