Illinois County Declares Itself A "Sanctuary County" For Gun Owners

While most of the talk about "sanctuary cities" revolves around immigration, one Illinois county is promising to be a "sanctuary county" for gun owners. The Effingham County Board passed a resolution that directs employees not to enforce any new state law that would “unconstitutionally restrict the Second Amendment.”

Effingham County State's Attorney Bryan Kibler said that the move is "largely symbolic" and will not impact will how the sheriff's office enforces laws.

Sheriff Dave Mahon said that if the state passed an "unconstitutional" firearms law he would work with the state's attorney and the Illinois Sheriff's Association before deciding on whether or not his officers would enforce it.

The county board voted in favor of the resolution by a vote of 8-1. According to the Effingham Daily News, 70 people attended the meeting and five people spoke about the proposed ordinance. Three of the speakers spoke against the ordinance while the other two supported it.
