FIU Announces Willie Simmons As New Head Football Coach

Miami, FL - Florida International University (FIU) has announced the hiring of Willie Simmons as the new head football of the Panthers' program.

Simmons, 43, brings a wealth of experience to FIU.

He served as the running backs coach at Duke University during the 2024 season.

Prior to that, he was the head coach at Florida A&M University (FAMU) from 2018 to 2023, where he achieved a 45-13 record and secured two HBCU national championships.

His tenure at FAMU was marked by a strong conference record and the development of multiple All-American players.

A native of Quincy, Florida, Simmons was a standout quarterback at Clemson University from 2000 to 2002.

His coaching career includes positions at Prairie View A&M, Alcorn State, Middle Tennessee State, and Clemson, showcasing his progression through the coaching ranks.

At FIU, Simmons succeeds Mike MacIntyre, who was dismissed earlier this month after three consecutive 4-8 seasons.

The Panthers have struggled historically, recording losing seasons in 17 of their 21 years.

Simmons' appointment is seen as a strategic move to leverage his successful track record and Florida ties to elevate the program's performance.

FIU Athletic Director Scott Carr expressed confidence in Simmons' ability to lead the team to new heights, citing his leadership qualities and commitment to student-athlete development.

Simmons is set to begin his role immediately, focusing on recruiting and preparing the team for the upcoming season.
