Key Biscayne, FL - A fatal collision involving a 66-year-old cyclist and a 12-year-old boy riding an electric bicycle has sparked calls for e-bikes to be banned in Key Biscayne.
According to Miami-Dade Police, the accident occurred Wednesday evening around 7:05 PM near the intersection of Hampton Lane and Woodcrest Road.
Authorities say the female cyclist was traveling southbound while the young boy was traveling northbound on his e-bike.
The two collided in the middle of the road, resulting in their falls.
The cyclist, whose identity remains undisclosed, was rushed to Ryder Trauma Center but died due to her injuries.
The 12-year-old boy sustained minor injuries.
Police confirmed that the boy was wearing a helmet, while the cyclist was not.
This accident has started discussions about e-bike safety and regulations within the village.
Mayor Joe Rasco announced an emergency council meeting planned for Friday where he intends to propose a ban on all e-bikes and electric scooters within the Village of Key Biscayne.
In a video message posted on the village's social media platforms, Mayor Rasco stated "This is a devastating loss for our community, and our hearts go out to the family of the victim. While the investigation is ongoing, the safety of our residents remains paramount. Therefore, I propose an immediate ban on e-bikes and electric scooters within village limits."
Authorities say an investigation into the deadly accident is ongoing.
