A trial is set to begin in the case of a driver accused in a hit and run that claimed the life of a 10-year old girl.

Arianna Colon, 22 years old at the time, is charged with crashing into Yancey Gonzalez as the girl was crossing a Fort Pierce street to get onto her school bus back in September of 2021.

Prosecutors say Colon ignored the flashing lights and the stop sign arm that was extended and took off after hitting Gonzalez.

She later sent a text message to a friend in which she admitted to the crime.

The charges of vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident involving death carry a maximum sentence of 45 years.

This type of crash served as inspiration for a new law that passed earlier this year, allowing school districts to install exterior cameras on passes to snap photos of drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses and fine them.
