Sandcastle Menorah Destroyed In Juno Beach But A Rebuild Is Underway

A sandcastle menorah that was destroyed and desecrated is being rebuilt in Palm Beach County.

Rabbi Leib Ezagui of the Jewish Community Synagogue says thanks to donations, a new menorah will be standing this evening next to the Juno Beach Pier.

"They took down eight candles. Tonight we'll be rebuilding hundreds of candles with the community."

The rabbi says the antisemitic vandals didn't just smash the sand...

"They took the tiki holders and made that into a swastika."

He says police are investigating the incident but he has bigger priorities.

"We were busy rebuilding. More important than finding who did it. We can blind this cowardly act with our acts of good deeds."

He's inviting people to show up at 5 p.m. for a menorah lighting on what will be the seventh night of Hanukkah.

Ezagui says the menorah is a symbol of hope and resilience for the Jewish people and the actions of antisemites will only make the community stronger.

Donations are still being accepted and any money raised above the cost of rebuilding the menorah will go towards the synagogue's Kind Kitchen, which delivers food to people in need from Boca Raton to Hobe Sound.
