The newly appointed sheriff in St. Lucie County has filed documents to officially run for the post in 2024.

Keith Pearson was named sheriff by Governor Ron DeSantis after longtime Sheriff Ken Mascara announced his retirement on Friday due to health concerns.

Pearson was a lieutenant with the agency and he tells CBS 12 News that his main goal as sheriff is continuing to battle the fentanyl epidemic.

Pearson is running for Sheriff as a Republican.
