Cellphone Distraction Turns Fatal: Woman Fatally Struck by Brightline Train

Broward County, FL - Broward County deputies have provided an update on the death of a pedestrian who was struck and killed by a Brightline train in Pompano Beach on Friday morning.

According to Broward Sheriff's Office spokesperson Carey Codd, the victim has been identified as 29-year-old Dyanna Fernandez of Fort Lauderdale.

The fatal collision occurred around 7:30 a.m. at the Northeast Sixth Street railroad crossing near the intersection of North Dixie Highway.

Eyewitnesses informed investigators that Fernandez was engrossed with her cell phone, walking around the lowered pedestrian crossing gate onto the tracks, oblivious to the oncoming train.

Medics pronounced Fernandez dead at the scene.

One witness, Fatima Labeet, shared a similar account with Local 10 News, recounting how Fernandez was walking with her head down, looking up briefly before being struck by the train.

As of Monday, Codd confirmed that the crash remained under investigation, with authorities working to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the incident.
