Former Cuban Baseball Star Arrested for Machete Attack in South Florida

Miami-Dade, FL - A former Cuban baseball player has been arrested for swinging a machete at another man in the parking lot of a South Florida shopping center.

Police say Oscar Macias-Hernandez was arrested in southwest Miami-Dade after being captured on surveillance footage swinging a machete at another man in a shopping center on Tuesday.

Macias-Hernandez, who was once a star second baseman for Cuba's national baseball team and won a silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, was taken into custody on Wednesday morning in the parking lot of a Home Depot in Kendall.

According to Miami-Dade Police, officers responded to reports of a man walking in the parking lot armed with a machete, matching the description of Tuesday's attacker.

When officers approached Macias-Hernandez, he refused to remove his hands from his pockets, instead grabbing the sheathed machete from the waistband of his shorts.

Macias-Hernandez then held the machete at his side and threatened officers in Spanish, saying "I'm going to hit you across the face with my machete" and threatening to kill another officer if approached.

Video footage showed a tense scene in the parking lot with a large police presence attempting to disarm Macias-Hernandez.

Despite his resistance, officers were able to disarm Macias-Hernandez and take the machete away from him while placing him under arrest.

Macias-Hernandez faces charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and trespassing.
