If you're heading out of town for Christmas next week, there are some steps you can take to keep your home safe, beyond the obvious like investing in a monitored security system.

Jessica Desir with the Boca Raton Police Department says neighbors are extremely helpful when it comes to crime prevention.

"Tell a trusted neighbor. Have somebody keep an eye on your home. Neighbors know when something is unusual. That car is not supposed to be in that driveway. Or there's somebody walking around the side of the house that's not known to the home."

You also may not want to make it obvious that your home is vacant.

"Put a hold on your mail deliveries. You can set a timer for your electronics (lights) so that it looks like somebody's home. Can you leave a car in your driveway? Even some people might go to the extent of having someone take the trash out for you. Make things look normal. Make it look like somebody's home."

And when it comes to social media, Officer Desir says don't post that you're out of town WHILE you're out of town. Wait until you return to share those special memories.
