(Surfside, FL) -- Florida Governor Ron DeSantis says the images on TV don't do the scene of a building collapse justice.

"First responders were able to save a lot of people. They are going to be going through more. It's a really, really tragic situation." DeSantis spoke briefly at the site of the condo building collapse in Surfside this afternoon, "We'll hope for the best in terms of additional recoveries, but we are bracing for bad news based on the destruction we're seeing."

He called the scene near Miami Beach "traumatic" after touring around the site near Miami Beach. At least one person died and more than 50 others are missing after the condo building partially collapsed early this morning.

The mayor of Surfside, the site of the collapse, called the scene "a catastrophe."

Miami Dade Fire said today that first responders are involved in a massive search and rescue operation and crews are tunneling under the building in a desperate effort to find survivors.
