Photo Showing Crowded School Hallway Causes Panic

The Palm Beach County School District says it made some safety adjustments after a photo from Boca Raton Community High School showed a crowd of students packing a hallway on the first day of in-person instruction.

The picture on social media led to worries about the spread of COVID-19, but one student explains what was going on.

“It was just a rainy day so everyone had to be like under the roof. No one wants to go in the rain.”

Greta Gelumbickas, a junior, says a majority of the students kept their masks on while taking cover and immediately walked to their classrooms.

The district released a statement, saying the school administration made adjustments to traffic flow by changing the schedule and will continue to stress the importance of maintaining a safe distance.

“As schools have reopened campuses, the health and safety of our students and staff remain a priority. Unfortunately, during a class change at Boca Community High School Monday, students sought shelter from the rain under covered hallways creating a crowded area.

School administration has made adjustments to traffic flow and supervision and will continue to stress the importance of maintaining a safe distance to mitigate issues moving forward.

Students are also encouraged to do their part to maintain social distancing and follow the direction of school administration and staff."

A school district spokesperson says the safety of students and staff continues to be a top priority.
