Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Reopens, Delays Expected

Airplane Traffic At JFK Airport in New York

Updated:

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport has reopened after an overnight closure due to the heavy rains and flooding, but based on the latest update from airport officials...it's a mess.

As of 8 a.m., the airport was experiencing more than 120 flight delays and six cancellations.

Passengers are advised to check with their airline for the latest flight status.

Heavy rain and flooding have been wreaking havoc on flights to South Florida.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport closed overnight amid some massive flooding there and roadways that were impassable.

The airport has now reopened and flight operations are resuming. But airport officials are warning that flooding has caused delays along roadways entering the airport.

Allow extra time and check with your airline. Some services, including shuttle buses, are experiencing disruptions.

Many cruise ship passengers who sail from Port Everglades also rely on the airport to get to and from the ships. According to the National Weather Service, nearly 4 and a half inches of rain fell in just one hour at the airport Sunday night, nearly setting the record for the highest one-hour total at that site.

There were dozens of delays and some cancellations.

Things are running much more smoothly at Palm Beach International, though officials there report at least 8 delays into and out of the airport. However, there are no cancellations on the flight boards at PBIA.
