FEMA Offering Temporary Housing For 34 Florida Counties

(Sarasota, FL) --FEMA is helping Floridians who need a safe place to stay following Hurricane Milton. The agency is offering Transitional Sheltering Assistance for storm victims living in 34 counties, as well as the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida. Eligible homeowners and renters can apply for temporary housing that will last up to 90 days. Federal officials are also able to help displaced residents with immediate needs and rental assistance. Applications are available through Disaster-Assistance-dot-gov.

FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers Open for Hurricane Milton Victims

(Indian River, FL)-- FEMA has opened Disaster Recovery Centers in Indian River, Martin, and St. Lucie counties to assist residents impacted by Hurricane Milton. The centers are offering help with claims and appeals for those affected by storm damage. Officials remind residents that FEMA aid is limited to filling gaps where insurance doesn't cover. The centers will be open throughout the week for one-on-one assistance.

Former Orange County Sergeant Remains in Jail on Murder Charges

(Orange County, FL)-- Former Orange County Sergeant Anthony Shea will remain in jail until his detention hearing on Friday. Shea, who is accused of murdering his estranged wife, Lt. Ellie Shea, was arrested on first-degree murder charges. Investigators say the shooting occurred after an argument in their home, initially appearing as a suicide. A multi-agency investigation led to Shea's arrest, and he has applied for indigent status, requesting a public defender.

Former College Student Charged After Infant Found Dead In Trash Can

(Tampa, FL) -- A former University of Tampa student is charged after her infant child was found dead in a trash can on campus. Brianna Moore was arrested Friday in Quitman, Mississippi on multiple charges, including Aggravated Manslaughter of a Child. Authorities say the child's body was found wrapped in a towel in a garbage bin in McKay Hall on April 28th. An autopsy determined that the infant died as a result of asphyxia and multiple rib fractures.

Prisoner Escapes in Maserati After Faking Chest Pain in Miami

(Miami, FL) -- A prisoner escaped in a Maserati after faking chest pain while being taken to a Miami hospital on Saturday. Miami-Dade Police say 36-year-old Theodrick Collins was initially arrested at PortMiami on out-of-state warrants. After being cleared at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Collins, still handcuffed, fled in a waiting silver Maserati. The vehicle was later detected in Jupiter by a License Plate Reader. A multi-agency search for Collins is ongoing.

Space Coast on Track to Break Annual Rocket Launch Record Before Halloween

(Cape Canaveral, FL)-- Florida's Space Coast is set to break its all-time annual rocket launch record before Halloween. A Falcon 9 Starlink satellite mission, scheduled for Monday, could mark the 72nd orbital launch of 2024, tying the previous record. With more launches expected in the coming months, the Cape is on track to surpass 73 launches by the end of October. SpaceX has been the primary driver of this growth, with 66 launches so far this year.

Savannah, Ga. Ranked "Most Welcoming" City

(Savannah, GA)-- A recent survey of travelers ranks Savannah, Georgia as the "most welcoming" city in the U.S. The survey by the company LuvLink asked three-thousand travelers where "they encountered the most warm-hearted and welcoming locals." The South dominated the top five with Jackson, Mississippi in second, followed by Murfreesboro, Tennessee; Port Saint Lucie, Florida; and Richmond, Virginia. Other notable cities included Buffalo, New York ranked 12th; Waco, Texas ranked 15th; and North Las Vegas, Nevada ranked 35th. LuvLink's website says it makes products that allow people to "connect with friends and family."
