Suspended Miami-Dade Commissioner To Run For Sheriff

(Miami, FL) -- A suspended Miami-Dade commissioner is trying to become the county's next top cop. Joe Martinez says he will run for sheriff this upcoming election. Martinez made the announcement after appearing in court for felony corruption charges yesterday. The case is in connection to allegations that Martinez accepted payments from a business owner while serving on the commission. The former police lieutenant believes the investigation is politically motivated since he considers himself a top candidate for the law enforcement position. This will be the first sheriff's race in Miami-Dade County since the position was eliminated in the 1960s.
