(Tallahassee, FL) -- The state of Florida is issuing a consumer alert to protect residents from identity theft. Attorney General Ashley Moody says this kind of fraud can impact someone's finances for years. The Federal Trade Commission says Florida accounted for nearly 30-percent of all fraud reports in the nation last year. To avoid becoming a victim, Moody says people should avoid sharing sensitive information online or over the phone, regularly check bank statements and use strong passwords.
Jacksonville Attorney Convicted Of COVID Relief Scam
(Jacksonville, FL) -- A Jacksonville attorney could face up to two decades in prison in connection to a federal COVID-19 relief scam. 40-year-old Shaquandra Woods was found guilty of illegally getting at least three-hundred-thousand dollars in economic disaster loans from the Small Business Administration. The U.S. Attorney's Office says she tried to get eight-hundred-thousand dollars in funding through the scheme. Woods is licensed to practice law in Florida and Georgia. She will undergo her sentencing at a later date.
Two Arrested For Breaking Into Polk County Church
(Lakeland, FL)-- Two men are accused of breaking into a church in Polk County. The sheriff's office announced yesterday that Nelson Newman and Ronald McClain were arrested Saturday. The 59-year-old Newman and 27-year-old McClain allegedly broke into Christ Memorial Baptist Church in Lakeland and stole 300 dollars worth of food. They're charged with burglary, theft and tampering with evidence. Sheriff Grady Judd says the two have a combined 36 prior arrests.
Miami Commissioner Wants Mayor To Resign
(Miami, FL) -- A Miami official thinks it's time for the mayor to step down. City Commissioner Damian Pardo asked for Mayor Francis Suarez to resign yesterday. Pardo was responding to a report in the Miami Herald that Suarez worked with Saudi Arabian rulers to hold a trade summit in Miami Beach in March. The Herald says that raises questions about whether Suarez should have registered as a foreign agent with the US Justice Department. Pardo says Suarez' actions make it unclear if he's serving outside, moneyed interests or the interests of residents. Suarez' spokeswoman, though, says the Herald's articles and Pardo's statement are comical, and the city's success during the mayor's tenure speaks for itself.
Report Accuses Cuba Of Trying To Interfere In Florida's 2022 Elections
(Tallahassee, FL)-- Cuba is accused of trying to interfere with Florida's elections in 2022.The allegation was made in a report released yesterday by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. According to a declassified version of the report, Cuba attempted to undermine the electoral prospects of candidates for congress and governor it viewed as hostile. The report also finds members of both major political parties were targeted. The report also alleges Cuba's government was connected to some social media accounts that amplified derogatory content about some US politicians who were critical of Cuba. No specific politicians were named in the declassified version of the report.
Video Of UPS Driver Getting Booted Draws Attention
(Allentown, PA)-- A viral video showing a UPS truck in Pennsylvania getting booted while on delivery rounds has drawn an investigation from the chair of the Allentown Parking Authority. The boot was eventually removed a half-hour later, but chairman Ted Zeller tells 69 News the entire thing is "inexcusable." He said that while UPS had multiple unpaid parking tickets, keeping a delivery driver from his work was "not appropriate action."
