Orlando Police Officer Released From Hospital After Shooting

(Orlando, FL)-- An Orlando Police officer shot in the line of duty is marking a milestone in his recovery. The OPD announced yesterday that the unidentified officer has been released from the hospital. Two officers were shot during a downtown traffic stop last week, and the OPD says the other officer is still in the hospital. Both are said to be doing well with their recovery, though. Still, they have a long road ahead of them. About 500 people have donated about 55-thousand dollars to a GoFundMe page for the officers.

Surfside Mayor Apologizes For Recent Comments

(Surfside, FL)-- It appears that there's still a rift between two officials in Surfside.Mayor Shlomo Danzinger apologized yesterday for comments he made about Commissioner Nelly Velasquez at a town commission meeting last week. Velasquez thought the comment was racist, and Danzinger said at yesterday's meeting he deeply regrets losing his composure and not choosing his words more carefully.Velasquez, though, says Danzinger has still not apologized to her personally, and she proposed censuring the mayor. 7News reports her motion failed, though.

Search For Missing Diver Called Off In Keys

(Key West, FL)-- The search for a missing diver in the Keys is suspended. The Coast Guard announced Monday it's no longer searching for Tommy Faulkenberry. The 44-year-old retired Coast Guard lieutenant went missing a week ago while exploring a wreck about seven miles off Key West. The Coast Guard says it searched about 43-hundred square miles for over 150 hours, but there was no sign of Faulkenberry. He leaves behind a wife and four sons. His brother tells NBC 6 Tommy loved the water, and he takes comfort recalling that his brother often said that when he dies, he wants to become one with the ocean.      

AAA Provides Tips As Millions Of Students Head Back To School

(Tallahassee, FL) -- Nearly three-million Florida students are getting ready to head back to the classroom later this week. That's why Triple-A is offering tips ahead of the new school to make sure students and drivers are safe. The association says this time of year is dangerous due to an increase of young inexperienced drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists in the early morning and afternoon hours. Officials say it's important to stay alert and avoid distractions while behind the wheel.It's also important to know that it's illegal to use your phone while driving through an active school zone.

Winning Mega Millions Ticket Sold In Florida

(Tallahassee, FL)-- Someone in Florida is holding a very valuable lottery ticket. The Mega Millions drawing was held last night for a jackpot of more than one-and-a-half billion dollars, and the winning ticket was sold in Duval County. The Florida Lottery says it was sold at a Publix in Neptune Beach. It's the biggest jackpot in Mega Millions history.Florida Lottery says this is the fourth time a Florida ticket buyer has hit the Mega Millions jackpot. The winner can choose to be paid in 30 installments or they can get a lump sum payment of over 783*million dollars.    

Italian Cheesemaker Dies After Being Crushed By Rounds Of Cheese

(Rome) -- An Italian cheesemaker is dead after being crushed by thousands of wheels of cheese. The man was checking on the cheese in his company's warehouse. It's unclear how the first collapse that triggered the "domino effect" occurred, authorities say. There were ten corridors of shelves that stretched floor-to-ceiling, with about 16-hundred rounds of cheese per corridor. It took more than 11 hours to find the 74-year old's body under the cheese.
