Man Found Dead After Armed Standoff In Brevard County
(Melbourne, FL)-- A Brevard County man is dead after an armed standoff with deputies. Sheriff Wayne Ivey says the man was killed in a shootout yesterday afternoon in a Melbourne Beach home. The standoff started when deputies were serving a drug warrant. Ivey says the man shot at deputies who shot back. No deputies were hurt. A woman in the home was shot and taken to the hospital. There's no word on her condition.Ivey has not said who shot her.
Man Arrested In Murder Of Florida Microsoft Executive
(Jacksonville Beach, FL) -- A man is in custody in connection to the murder of a Florida Microsoft executive. Authorities charged 61-year-old Henry Tenon for the death of Jared Bridegan in Jacksonville Beach almost one year ago. Bridegan had dropped off his twins at his ex-wife's home and was heading back to St. Augustine with his two-year-old daughter when he was shot and killed. Police believe the incident was a setup. State Attorney Melissa Nelson says the suspect did not act alone in the crime, which is why her office is sharing limited information about the case. Tenon is expected in court today.
Feds Make Arrests In South Florida Nursing Scheme
(Miami, FL) -- More than two dozen people are facing charges for a South Florida nursing school scam. Federal prosecutors were in Miami yesterday saying they have arrested 21 out of 25 suspects linked to Operation Nightingale. Authorities say three formerly-accredited nursing schools in Broward and Palm Beach counties sold more than 76-hundred fake diplomas worth more than one-hundred-million dollars. The FBI says the Sunshine State leads the nation in healthcare fraud. Those who are facing charges were from Florida, New York, New Jersey, Texas and Delaware.
Crump Threatens To Sue DeSantis Over AP African American Studies
(Tallahassee, FL) -- Civil rights attorney Ben Crump is laying out what steps he will take next if Florida doesn't allow a new Advanced Placement course for African American Studies. While in Tallahassee yesterday, the attorney stood next to Black lawmakers and activists to condemn the DeSantis administration's decision last week. Crump says he would sue the governor if an agreement is not reached with the College Board. The state Department of Education has said the current program goes against Florida law that bans critical race theory. The College Board is planning to release a revised version of the course next month.
Mother Sues School District Over OnlyFans Controversy
(Orlando, FL) -- A mother is accusing a Central Florida school district of banning her from volunteering because of her connection to OnlyFans. Victoria Triece filed a lawsuit against Orange County Public Schools after she was told in October that she could not continue her five-year volunteer role because of her participation on adult-only internet sites. Her lawyers are accusing the district of denying the mother of three the right to take part in her children's lives. The district has yet to release a statement on the issue.
Orange County Teachers Discuss Student Behavior Problems
(Orlando, FL)-- Orange County teachers are worried about the way students are being disciplined. Members of the Orange County Classroom Teachers Association met yesterday to discuss what can be done to improve student behavior. Teachers say students aren't facing any consequences for being tardy or skipping class and that leads to more serious problems. A member of the student discipline task force tells Channel 9 they'll use the teacher comments to offer suggestions.
FWC Releases Report On Bear Attack At Jacksonville Zoo
(Jacksonville, FL)-- A new report shows a bear that attacked and hurt an employee at the Jacksonville Zoo had a history of problems. The FWC has released a report on last month's incident involving a black bear named Johnny and a female zookeeper. The report says Johnny had a history of anxiety and was on medication for it. He wound up having four teeth pulled because of excessive wear and tear from constantly biting the fence in his enclosure. Johnny used to be a wild bear, but he was taken to the zoo because he kept approaching humans for food. First Coast News reports the FWC found the zoo failed to rehabilitate Johnny, and he was non-releasable.
