(Polk City, FL)-- Polk County police are describing the moments leading up to the death of one of their youngest deputies yesterday morning. Sheriff Grady Judd says 21-year-old Blane Lane was trying to serve an outstanding arrest warrant for a meth charge in Polk City. The deputy was killed in a shootout after he was accidentally hit by a round from another deputy. The suspect, Cheryl Williams, was armed with a BB gun during the incident and also hit by gunfire. She will face a felony second-degree murder charge once she is released from the hospital.

(Tallahassee, FL)-- The state of Florida is warning people to remain cautious against insurance scams. State Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis says people need to be wary of some claim adjusters and roofing contractors looking to exploit those most vulnerable. New figures from the state are showing more than one-point-six-billion dollars in insurance claims have already been filed due to Hurricane Ian. Officials say the key to the process is patience as it might take a week or two before insurance companies get around to inspecting someone's property.
Volusia County Schools Reopen Today
(DeLand, FL) -- Some sense of normalcy will return to Volusia County today. Schools in the district are open for the first time since Hurricane Ian hit the area. Some bus stops are changed because of flooding, and one bus stop will be at the Ocean Center, which is being used as a shelter. The superintendent says students and staff will be asked what they need, and a list will be given to local aid groups. She also tells News 6 mental health counselors will be at the school.
Flagler County Man Used Child As Shield During Police Standoff
(Palm Coast, FL)-- A Flagler County man is accused of endangering a child during a standoff with deputies. The sheriff's office says Palm Coast's Brandon Leohner was wanted last week for the armed kidnapping of his girlfriend's one-year-old child. When deputies confronted the 28-year-old outside a shopping center on SR 100, he allegedly used the child as a shield. Deputies Tased Leohner, and he fell to the ground, but deputies were able to save the child from being hurt. Leohner is facing charges that include kidnapping, using a minor as a shield and child neglect.
Jacksonville Firefighter Arrested For Eluding Troopers While Speeding
(Jacksonville, FL)-- A Jacksonville firefighter is being disciplined following his arrest. John Overton was arrested Saturday after the FHP says he was speeding and refused to pull over. The FHP says troopers first spotted the 20-year-old on a motorcycle on I-95 North near J. Turner Butler Boulevard. He then turned onto I-95 South and was clocked at over 100 miles an hour. An FHP plane monitored Overton as he drove home where he was arrested. The JFRD tells News4Jax he's now on desk duty while under investigation.
ULA Conducts Launch
(Cape Canaveral, FL)-- ULA can celebrate a successful launch. United Launch Alliance's Atlas V rocket blasted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station late yesterday afternoon. The rocket was carrying two commercial communications satellites. Meanwhile, the SpaceX Crew-5 launch is set for noon today at the Kennedy Space Center. A Dragon capsule will carry four men and women to the International Space Station.
Couple Charged With Alleged Sex Act At Cedar Point
(Sandusky, OH)-- A couple is facing charges in Ohio after allegedly being caught in a sex act at the Cedar Point amusement park. Sandusky police say it happened on Friday night while the couple was in line near the Freak Show attraction. The charges against them are being upgraded because those who witnessed the alleged act are under 18. It's the second time in about a month-and-a-half people have been charged for alleged sex acts at the park.

(Amarillo, TX)-- Cattle ranchers in West Texas are strapping fit-bits on their cows. The fitness trackers keep track of the herd's movements at a time when the industry is facing a labor shortage. Instead of wrapping them around their hooves, they're worn as ear tags and collars. The high-tech trackers, made by Micro Technologies of Amarillo, can also alert ranchers if their cattle may be getting sick.
