Cubans Report Crackdown On Island

(Miami, FL) -- Despite an attempt to restrict information, word is getting out on what's happening in Cuba. A source tells CBS4 News the government has cleared the streets of protesters after arresting hundreds of people. Some have reportedly disappeared. Human rights group CubaLex claims almost 600 people have been arrested, including 91 who have been released and 40 who are missing or in an unknown location.  

GOP Town Hall In Miami Focuses On Cuba

(Miami, FL) -- The governor has some sharp criticism for how President Biden is responding to protests in Cuba. Governor Ron DeSantis took part in a Fox News town hall in Miami last night at Versailles Restaurant on Southwest 8th Street. DeSantis said Biden is doing nothing to help Cubans who are rallying for freedom, and he's leaving them out to dry. DeSantis has called on Biden to use our technological know-how to help Cubans access the internet, and he says if the protests are stamped out, it will mean even stronger power for the regime. 

Cocoa Police Change Policy To Avoid Having Patrol Cars Stolen

(Cocoa, FL) -- Police in Brevard County have a new policy to prevent more patrol cars from being stolen. Cocoa Police had two patrol cars stolen two months ago, and Police Chief Evander Collier announced a new policy yesterday. He didn't provide details, but he tells News 6 it's a no-brainer that you shouldn't leave your car running and unlocked with a key in it. Collier, meanwhile, met with residents of Royal Garden Homes to discuss having more officers patrol city parks. 

FSU's Bowden Reports Terminal Medical Condition

(Tallahassee, FL) -- Bobby Bowden says he's at peace after getting some upsetting news. The former Florida State football coach announced yesterday he has a terminal medical condition, but he didn't disclose what it is. The 91-year-old, who turns 92 in November, says he has always tried to serve God's purpose for his life, on and off the field, and he's prepared for what's to come. He also tells the Democrat his wife of 72 years and his family have been life's greatest blessing. 

Polk County Votes To Move Confederate Monument

(Bartow, FL) -- A Confederate monument in Polk County may be moved to a less prominent location. The county commission voted this week to move a monument outside the Polk County History Center in Bartow to Oak Hill Cemetery. The vote was not scheduled on the commission's agenda, and Bartow City Commissioner Leo Longworth tells 8 On Your Side that makes it even more controversial. Longworth and his colleagues will get a chance to weigh in on the move before it's official. 

Sharks Seen In Tampa Bay Canals

(Longboat Key, FL) -- Another effect of red tide is visible in Tampa Bay. Longboat Key residents say they're seeing a lot more sharks than they usually do in canals near their homes. One man says he used to see one a day, but now he's seeing up to 20 in just 10 minutes. A scientist tells 10 Tampa Bay red tide is forcing sharks to find water where there's more oxygen, but once red tide goes away, so will the sharks. 

Bear Spotted Inside Olympic Venue

(Fukushima) -- It appears a bear is ignoring rules keeping fans from attending Olympic events in Tokyo. Police in Fukushima [[ foo-koo-shee-muh ]] say an Asian black bear was seen inside Azuma Sports Park before the first game was played on Wednesday. That's where baseball and softball games are taking place for the Summer Games. The bear wasn't captured but police noted they'll be on the lookout. Softball is returning as an event for the first time in 13 years.

2012, the statue of former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno was removed from the school's Beaver Stadium on this date. The statue's removal followed revelations that the legendary coach played a role in the cover-up of the child sex abuse scandal involving former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

1995, a jury found Susan Smith guilty of first-degree murder for drowning her two young sons. She was later sentenced to life in prison. 

1991, Milwaukee Police arrested Jeffrey Dahmer. He was suspected of killing 17 people. Detectives found eleven skulls, three headless torsos and other body parts in his apartment. Dahmer later confessed to the murders.

1975, Confederate Army General Robert E. Lee's U.S. citizenship was restored by Congress.

1934, notorious outlaw John Dillinger was shot and killed by FBI agents at Chicago's Biograph Theatre.
