04.12.21- Always the Activist

We spent Friday defending the home and first amendment rights of School Board Member Jennifer Jenkins. Protesters had targeted her home for their less than becoming actions.

I get that protesting is a right and these people did not violate the home, but it was a bad idea. Counter protesters have taken to drawing chalk rainbows of support on the sidewalk and driveway of the home.

But that’s not enough for Jenkins who, in talking to Florida Today, blamed former board member Tina Descovich for the actions of the protesters. Tina had denounced their methods upon learning of them.

Jenkins said the problem was that Tina had spread word of the issue in play on social media.

The real problem here is an elected official; saying that constituents talking about an issue that concerns them is a problem.

Maybe the teacher turned board member needs some constitutional schooling!

04.13.21- Emboldened Anarchists

The Brooklyn Center, MN shooting is a tragedy for everyone involved and a lot of folks who weren’t.

The officer, in what is reported as an accidental use of a firearm, shot and killed Daunte Wright as he resisted arrest and tried to flee the officers.

From all appearances the officer stated and believed she was about to discharge a Taser when she fired the fatal shot.

That’s bad enough, but the situation is worsened when the general public decided a riot was in order.

Police in America now live in a tinderbox where any action can result in a public explosion of wrath and destruction

Elected officials don’t help by condemning cops before the investigation is done. They fan the flames by capitulating to the demanding mobs. It only encourages them.

Until that stops we can look for more of this to occur.

04.14.21- Minnesota Meltdown

What’s happening in Brooklyn Center, MN should be a warning to us all. Our society is crumbling around us and our elected officials are contributing to the decline.

When the white female cop shot and killed the black man who was wanted for a felony as he was fighting and trying to flee, the reaction was predictable. Riots ensued.

Encouraging that were the actions of elected officials who called for the cop’s firing without due process, then firing the city manager who said due process was necessary and then handing control over the police department to the mayor.

Appeasing the riotous crowd is a mistake. Arresting lawbreakers is the job of the police and if they aren’t allowed to do their jobs, society is lost.

There are ways and means of having grievances addressed and riots aren’t part of that.

If we don’t change this, I fear for us all.

04.15.21- Reactionary Legislation

The state of Georgia is understandably upset that Major League Baseball played politics in moving this season’s All Star Game from Atlanta to Denver.

The protests about Georgia’s new election law, which were based on lies about the legislation, were too effective. They got major corporations engaged and baseball came up with this bonehead move that hurts the very people the protests claimed they were trying to help.

Even so, reactive legislation is never a good idea, but one Georgia lawmaker has gone there.

The law would make it illegal for MLB (and presumably others) to move an event out of state for political reasons. It would also allow for recovery of anticipated losses by area businesses.

Bad idea.Big government is not a help as umpire school taught me- baseball will take care of itself.

04.16.21- Drink Up, Brevard…or Not

County Commissioner John Tobia has proposed a measure to allow liquor sales around the clock in unincorporated Brevard. I’m a less regulation/more freedom guy, but the Florida Today story on the issue got my attention.

Of the several bar owners or operators interviewed, the idea seems to be a nonstarter with them for a variety of reasons. They, working on the front lines, have a good perspective.

They note the lack of customer base for such hours, that the late night/early morning crowd may not be the most desirable of clientele and that the sales would not support paying staff for the extra hours. One was concerned that being the last stop of the morning could present problems, too.

From what I hear, this appears to be a kind of support for more freedom. Given the choice, these folks would do what’s right for them…and that’s as it should be.
