Mick's Morning News

School Starts Today In Orange County

(Orlando, FL) -- It'll be an unusual start to the school year in Orange County. Classes begin today in Central Florida's largest district but online-only through the LaunchEd program. Classrooms are set to open on the 21st. Superintendent Barbara Jenkins advised parents last week that technological challenges are expected, but the experience should improve with time, and she thanked everyone for their patience.

Woman Kills Armed Intruder

(Brandon, FL) -- A deadly shooting in Hillsborough County appears to be a domestic incident. Deputies say a woman shot and killed a man who broke into her home yesterday morning. Police believe the two knew each other. A man in the home was shot by the intruder, but he's expected to survive, and the woman was not hurt.

Protesters Arrested In Tampa

(Tampa, FL) -- Protesters are asking for answers after their arrests in Tampa. Police arrested seven people this weekend at Curtis Hixon Park. The protesters were at the park to call for an end to police brutality, and they were arrested after they started painting a mural on a sidewalk. Some protesters tell the Tampa Bay Times they were never read their rights, and they wonder why no one was arrested when a Back the Blue, pro-police, mural was painted on Madison Street over a week ago.

Boaters Rescued Off Jax Beach

(Jacksonville Beach, FL) -- Some parents have a warning for other boaters after an incident off Jacksonville Beach. A mom and dad were in a boat with their five-year-old daughter yesterday when it capsized. Rescue crews and a jet skier helped them get safely to shore. Everyone is OK, and the parents tell News4Jax boaters need to remember to have flotation devices, especially with children onboard.

Walt Disney World Cutting Some Hours

(Orlando, FL) -- Walt Disney World is making some changes to its theme parks. All four of the parks will have reduced hours starting September 8th. Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios will shut down an hour earlier while Epcot and Animal Kingdom will close two hours earlier.

Florida Woman Finds Python In Washing Machine

(West Palm Beach, FL) -- A woman in West Palm Beach says she made a surprising discovery while doing a load of laundry. Emily Visnic says she was pulling clothes out of her washer when she found a python inside. While it's unclear how the reptile got there, it was determined that it had been living in the appliance for a while. A maintenance worker at the apartment complex came and took the snake away.
