FDLE Reviewing Brevard Inmate's Death
(Tallahassee, FL) -- The death of a Brevard County inmate is raising questions. The FDLE announced yesterday it's investigating last year's death of Gregory Edwards, who was being held at the county jail. Edwards died a day after a fight with deputies, and the medical examiner determined the cause was 'excited delirium.' The FDLE tells Florida Today the review could take several weeks.
Suspect Threatens Violence Against Deputy And Sheriff
(DeLand, FL) -- Volusia County's sheriff doesn't appear to be fazed by threats made against him. Deputies this week arrested Seminole County's Avis Akins for allegedly threatening to shoot up a gas station in Deltona. After the arrest, deputies say the 22-year-old threatened to kill the arresting deputy, the deputy's children and Sheriff Mike Chitwood by blowing up Chitwood's house. Chitwood told the News Journal yesterday the threats are no big deal, but he warns that if the suspect tried to carry out any of those threats, it would not end well for the man.
Bodycam Video Shows Suspect Pleaded For Help Before Drowning
(Altamonte Springs, FL) -- A police department in Seminole County is defending the actions of its officers in a suspect's death. Altamonte Springs Police yesterday released bodycam video that shows 19-year-old Cristian Milian drowning over a week ago. The alleged car thief jumped into a retention pond on Calabria Drive while fleeing police, and in the video, he can be heard screaming for help because he couldn't swim. Officers hesitated before trying to rescue him, and a police spokeswoman tells the Orlando Sentinel the danger posed by entering the water is a great risk for officers to take.
MPD Officers Want Chief Fired
(Miami, FL) -- Some Miami Police officers are going public with their beef with their chief. Lieutenant Ramon Carr is among those who want Chief Jorge Colina fired for not promoting more black officers. Carr and others are also expected to say at a press conference today there isn't enough experience in the homicide unit or internal affairs. Colina tells NBC 6 the complaints are coming from black male officers who are upset that he has promoted more black females.
St. Pete Changes Plastic Straw Ban
(St. Petersburg, FL) -- A controversial law is already undergoing changes in Pinellas County. St. Petersburg's plastic straw ban will take effect January First, and the city council voted yesterday to do away with a grace period that would have allowed businesses to hand out plastic straws upon request. The council also says straws made of alternative materials can only be handed out upon request, and it clarified which kind of straws are acceptable alternatives.
Motorola Hopes To Make Flip Phones Cool Again
(Chicago, IL) -- Motorola is hoping to make flip phones cool again, but the price may scare away most consumers. The company plans to release its 15-hundred dollar Razr [[ razor ]] in January. It's a smart phone running Google's Android operating system with a foldable dual screen. Instead of other foldable screens that have opened like a book to be more like a tablet, this phone opens up to the size of a traditional smart phone. The phone will be available for pre-order in late December.
Iowa Woman Poses As Teen To Catch Predator Son-In-Law
(Clinton, IA) -- An Iowa man will serve time in prison for child pornography after being exposed by his mother-in-law. Authorities in Clinton say 34-year-old Ryan Budde promised his wife he would not talk to teens online, but his unconvinced mother-in-law posed online as a 15-year-old boy and messaged Budde. Prosecutors say within two weeks, Budde asked the "boy" to have sex. He was arrested and sentenced to 130 months in prison on child porn charges following his mother-in-law's sting and a larger online investigation. Over 300 images of child porn were found on his devices and he uploaded multiple files to social media site Tumblr. He is now divorced from his wife and has no parental rights.
