North Dakota Man Pleads Guilty To Attempted 'Witch' Murder

(Grand Forks, ND) -- A North Dakota man is pleading guilty to trying to kill a woman because he though she was a witch. Prosecutors say 21-year-old Akmal Azizov stalked a female University of North Dakota student and formulated a plan to kill her after becoming convinced that she was wicked. He bought an antique silver pocket knife online, broke into the woman's apartment, and slashed her throat several times. She managed to escape to a neighbor's place, and Azizov was eventually arrested, telling police he "needed to slay her." His attorney told the court he is schizophrenic. Azizov, who pled to charges of attempted murder, stalking and criminal mischief, could face 20 years in prison or deportation to his native Uzbekistan.
